Because there have been allusions to it going back 10 years. For instance: Virginia Giuffre's lawsuit. She claimed back in 2015 that Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell facilitated years of sexual abuse and involved a network of influential individuals. The lawsuit reportedly mentioned over 150 "John and Jane Does" connected to Epstein.
Also...we're burying the lede. The Attorney General of the United States directly contradicted the AP's reporting in regards to Epstein's possession of sexual material involving minors. We have been told by the highest law enforcement officer in the country that he had tens of thousands of files of child porn, yet he was never charged with such a crime and sources mentioned in your article claim such files don't even exist.
Someone isn't being truthful here.

Well, perhaps thats how they now know the files are corrupted
What was said at trial, and what was reported by the media back then, differ widely from what James Comeys daughter turned over to Bondi
