"The federal statute strongly supports the proposition that the Kennedy Center is legally required to remain named for John F. Kennedy, and that the Board cannot simply rename it for Donald Trump.

The key provision is 20 U.S.C. § 76i(a). It says Congress directed that the building “shall be designated as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.”

There is an additional, unusually strong provision in 20 U.S.C. § 76h. Congress declared that the Center is to be maintained as:
“a living memorial to John Fitzgerald Kennedy”
and Congress specifically found that this institution, named in Kennedy's memory, should serve as the “sole national monument to his memory within the District of Columbia and its environs.”

So can the Board add Trump's name?
No, according to the federal district court that has already ruled on this exact question. Judge Christopher Cooper held in May 2026 that the Kennedy Center's statutory name cannot be changed by the Board; Congress would have to amend the statute. The court ordered Trump's name removed."

There hasn't been any blowback to making repairs. It's just the name change and shutting it down for two years...which are related.

When Trump's name was added in December of 2025, performers who had been booked canceled in droves to protest. With all the cancelations and empty dates, the Trump Kennedy Center was projected to lose $100 million over the next year because of the collapse in projected revenue.

THEN to cover the embarrassment the idea of completely closing the Center was magically proposed for the first time on February 1, 2026.
Luckily, the dangerously deteriorating condition of the Trump Kennedy Center didn't exist on January 29, 2026 when the Melania: the Documentary gala was held.

This was the response from President Trump in May when Judge Cooper ruled that Trump's name couldn't go on the Kennedy Center Building.

He SAID he was washing his hands of the Center and transferring it to Congress. The President never explained why he changed his mind. My guess is that Howard Lutnick or some other toady on the Board came up with another way to get Trump's name on the building...leading to the NEW strategy: let me put my name on the building or I'm going to bulldoze it.
