The Trump administration officially asked the Supreme Court Monday to rule in favor of states that seek greater authority to collect sales taxes on Internet purchases, taking sides in a case bound to divide Republicans.

In an amicus brief filed Monday, Solicitor General Noel Francisco asked the court to update its jurisprudence regarding states' power to collect sales taxes from companies that aren't physically in the state.

Honestly if there is going to be a sales tax states should be able to collect it for internet purchases. It’s the only thing that makes sense.

Trump ruling in favor of states having more control. Hate the tax idea, but don't mind states gaining more power over legislation for their residents. I believe residents deserve the people they vote in making decisions for their state, even when it turns a state into a shite hole like California.

man, that is so naive. People don't have a say. Elections only create the appearance.

I run a large portfolio of online businesses. I hope and pray that Trump is finally the one to get this instilled. Tax nexus is such a messy thing to manage and it makes no sense to have people "self-report" internet taxes.

1) They're asking for the states to have the authority to tax companies that are essentially evading taxes.

2) It's a consumption tax.

Frankly, this should help smaller businesses to a certain degree.

A small step toward getting Amazon under control. Breaking it uo with antitrust laws is the real solution.

More taxes should never be an answer.

It's amusing to watch "conservatives" defend this, though.

In Missouri, The tax has been in place but substantially under reported because the "individual" had to report this on a use tax return. Hard to enforce. Having the business collect would be much simpler at least from the state side. I file sales and use tax returns in multiple states and uniformity would help a lot. I don't have the # of states that has this as well but enforcement is very difficult. Each Department of Revenue have a limited # of auditors.

I know it will be a bigger burden to the businesses in 5 states that currently dont collect sales tax.
