The Trump administration has levied billions in fines against illegal migrants who have refused deportation orders, according to a report.

Immigrants have been fined at least $6.1 billion since President Trump took office in January, with some people facing millions in fines for staying in the US years after they were ordered to leave, the Wall Street Journal reported.

In total, 21,500 fines have been issued, sometimes to the tune of nearly $1,000 for every day stayed past removal orders.

Those facing fines have been threatened with lawsuits by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), hounded by debt collectors and subjected to crushing IRS tax penalties, according to the newspaper.

Meanwhile, immigrants who chose to self-deport from the US are rewarded.

It’s an easy choice: Leave voluntarily and receive [a] $1,000 check, or stay and wait till you are fined $1,000 [a] day, arrested and deported without a possibility to return legally,” a senior DHS official told the Journal.

DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin characterized the fines as a common-sense approach towards people who are blatantly ignoring the law of the land.

These fines are targeted toward illegal aliens who ignore removal orders and do not honor voluntary departure agreements,” she said.

How many $ have they collected?

I like the idea of motivation (carrot) to self deport (cheaper, quicker, and safer for us), and the fines (stick). But does it amount to any real $? Heck, maybe if they can freeze bank accounts, etc. Seems at least some of these illegals have accumulated some wealth inside our borders.

Having a huge debt to our govt might make it harder for them to get in as an asylum seeker in the future

This is the way. Now we can put those 80,000 IRS agents to work.

Or to fund more ICE agents.

Imagine getting levied a fine and the US seizes your assets (truck, gold, diamonds, etc) all of which goes to pay for more agents to round up your illegal pals

I think people are missing the point in that this large fines, even if not collected, are listed as outstanding and in essence then make it impossible in the future to ever return legally…

If the southern border remains air tight, then the only recourse is the actually go through the real process. Unfortunately, if you have an outstanding fine or penalty you would not be eligible to start the process….

It is just another carrot and stick concept to help once again incentivize self deportation. Leave on your own and we drop the fines, get caught and deported and those fines stay in place and so you can never return (either to try to get a work permit or tourist visa).

No funding there if the fines aren’t paid.
