Many of the Caribbean islands complained, the loudest Barbados. Barbados who is being bailed out by the IMF (largely controlled by the US) for the second time. And the number one source country for tourism is...once again the US. Beetches.

Our prime minister supported it. When they asked her to elaborate she said "kill them with a vengeance, and we will not do any search and rescue". She even had the US military set up a radar site in Tobago (our sister island).

Flash forward. The US gave us a billion dollar "loan". They have announced the World Bank will be setting up a regional office and announcing billions in investment. Two American data centers signed a MOU. And a Vanadium metal company out of the US has announced plans to reopen our steel plant (Vanadium is used by the US military and aerospace).

I spent a week in Barbados about 20 years ago. On the first day we took a bus tour of the island, and the tour guide proudly told us how they don’t have a drug problem because they have extremely strict drug laws. A couple hours later, we found a bag of hash on the street, literally just on the ground.

I am glad Trinidad can rely on other industry besides tourism. It's a pretty meh island. Tobago is marginally better.
