The FCC does not limit speech. They limit words. Coitus and F**k mean the same thing. Yet one is deemed unacceptable, one is not. The FCC is not denying anyone from "expressing" the idea of sexual intercourse, only the words used to describe the idea.
Now, if the FCC were to deny any religious programming or deny some atheist programming because of beliefs, then the government would be limiting free speech(expression of ideas).
You have more patience than I do

AGAIN, the first amendment does NOT guarantee absolute freedom to say whatever you want no matter how crude or vulgar from any medium you wish. Additionally, as several others have stated, the FCC isn't restricting opinions. They are restricting how those opinions are conveyed as a means of common decency.

but that's not what we're discussing. I don't care why, that's irrelevant.

To my knowledge, the FCC does not limit anyone from expressing their ideas.
they engage in that every day, but of course you're applying some standard that wasn't in a one sentence law. If they wanted to replace "speech" with "ideas" and then clarify the distinction, they would have.

They HAVE tried to squelch the amount of conservative radio in the past. Stating that stations have to give equal time to opposing views
ooooooh....HAVE. They HAVE, and if they HAVE then you're just proving my fricking point. And that law was on the books for 50 years...it was scrapped, not ruled unconstitutional...they have the power and judicial interpretation to bring that right back.

I'm in awe of the mental gymnastics you went through to arrive at this conclusion.
is this the ideas vs. speech argument with a bow on it?
again, how fricking stupid do you think the framers were? It is one sentence and it is about as deliberate as possible.
and my absolute favorite part is that you got to the real deep and dirty bullshite behind the FCC, regulating morals and decency.
that's a totally different conversation, yet no one can clarify what makes, for instance, the word "frick" indecent. some assholes in the dark ages though saying it would give them the plague, so centuries later, morons abide by the same rules even though they can't tell you why
the supreme court ruled you can say frick in public...but a previous law, the one being discussed here, won't let you say it on public airwaves.
public space is also finite, so why the distinction?

You have the freedom to say anything you want.
You aren't promised freedom from consequences though.

quote:Granted my kids are older now, but I would never use the word f**k around them and would not want them watching a show that did either. I'm sorry you can't see the difference between something that is vulgar/obscene versus political correctness.
so if they mean the exact same thing, then who gives a shite which phonetic sounds we string together to express that idea? I really hope you aren't one of these people who gets annoyed with the PC crusade because you're defending the practice right now.

What point are you arguing.....that we as individuals do not have free speech. Or the FCC is controlling what goes over the airwaves?
I as an individual have the right to speak my mind, but that does not mean I have to be given an audience.
I have no problem with FCC banning obscene words and nudity from the public broadcasts airwaves.

Has this angle been discussed -- So few companies own media that there's a very narrow filter put on just about everything that we hear and read.

1) make up own definition of free speech that doesn't exist anywhere
2) get really angry it doesn't exist here
3) go on message board and question whether non-existent thing exists here
4) repeat

Well I do. Others who give in and cave to the leftist speech and thought police don't.

First, I can't comprehend how they are able to fine someone for saying "frick" it is a word that we have arbitrarily assigned obscenity status to, it's just a word.
Run into a crowed theatre. Yell "fire" at the top of your lungs. When you are arrested try the "its just a word, man" defense.

This is such a tiring defense as to how we can limit people's free speech. Find something new.
