why?

children are not at danger on this

Sweden has kept schools open, and we are not seeing any negative consequences from that

my take is that he should opt for May 4th

shows he made a strong decision; yet gives him ample time to see what happens from here

IF things stay like they are; get them in class

IF things deteriorate, reverse the decision

I guess I am thinking K-12. Aren't those schools done by early May anyway?

Colleges/summer semesters are a different topic.

Last day in MS is May 24-29 depending on the district, so its basically the full month.

Going to do all this shuffling around with 3-4 weeks of school left ? Who watches the kids for these “reassigned” teachers? Schools have a hard time getting subs as it is bc nobody wants to deal with today’s youth . State testing has been lifted for this year . Kids have checked out for this year . Schools are a Petri dish anyway for colds, flu , etc . Might as well close it or at least push it back further

Here's the deal.

If Mississippi decides to close for the year - people will be pissed because it wasn't done sooner.

If Mississippi decided they are going back before the end of the year - the same people will be pissed because they are going back.

Personally, I think they should go back and get as much real instruction as possible. If that's only 3-4 weeks, so be it. I imagine if they do go back, the truancy policies will be relaxed for those who are uncomfortable. But neighborhood pools will be backed by the end of May regardless.

prom and graduation for the seniors

mental and emotional health of ALL the children

returning to "normalcy" as much as we can

these are good enough reasons to open now that the danger of overwhelming our medical resources has passed

there won't be that many of them, and there are PLENTY of people on stafff that can step in if needed

almost every principal, assistant principal and counselor in most schools is a former teacher

put them in the classroom

place the kids in larger classes with a higher student/teacher ratio

for me; this is as much (if not more) about the mental health and socialization of the kids -- they need it

You are not going to get quality instruction putting counselors and principals in classrooms , which they are not going to do anyway . Not sure about where you live , but the kids in my neighborhood seem to be doing fine mentally . They are out playing outside , riding golf carts, bicycles etc

Tater needs to announce Schools will open Monday, and he will let his "stay-at-home" order expire on Monday morning, as well.

Let people get back to work and go on about their normal lives!

I suspect that is what he will do. He wants to be seen as a “trendsetter” . He is catching a lot of heat locally and nationally in his responses so far.

Ah. Yeah I don't disagree. It'd be good to put the senior stuff back into swing...i.e. prom graduation

Most , if not all schools have cancelled prom for this year. Most were in March and early April. Social distancing and venue availability have made that almost impossible . Hate it for the seniors .

And that can be and has been extended before to make up for weather days, no reason it can not be done here.

Would we be the only state in the country with kids at school if we went through with this?

I am not crying People need to be able to earn a living . I think allowing businesses to open is good for everyone

I just am not sure going “full steam ahead” is necessarily the right thing at this time . Schools , concerts, large gatherings, etc might need to be brought along gradually as numbers go way down or we have some kind of effective treatment . I DO think businesses have a right to try to make a living during this time and not be labeled as essential or not

Also those little shits have been getting on my lawn and riding bicycles around town! Plus it allows all of them to play CoD all the time and I’ve been getting smoked by their faster reflexes. Send their asses back to school.

You've shite on the idea of schools reopening in 4 different posts on this thread... you must be a school teacher that's enjoying your free ride sitting on your arse all day.

It's cool, both my parents were high school teachers, I know how y'all roll.

would be stupid to do anything else at this point.

wait it's mississippi so -

Kids do not get this Covid shite and many are being very negatively affected with no food....abusive conditions etc. Let the teachers cover their faces like they will need to do in general society as well....flattening the curve does nothing to end the epidemic NOTHING. We need herd immunity.

Why in the hell would it be stupid?
