Currently the K-12 schools in Mississippi are scheduled to open Monday (a week from yesterday). A decision will be announced today. Here are the choices.

Open on Monday as planned
Push back one week to April 27 (and have four and a half weeks of school)
Push back two weeks to May 4 (and have three and a half weeks of school)
Close for year

The April 27 buzz is strong. But I know nothing. The governor is going to face backlash no matter the decision. This is a chance for him to be strong and lead instead of following the crowd.

That's what I am wondering. Why is it stupid to not close for the year. The majority of states will open back up. Alabama made the decision way too early. New York is going back April 29. And that's been tripled down on.

Yeah it was dumb, but technically our kids went back to school last Monday. It's just all virtual learning.

We're in virtual learning in MS as well. But they need to be back in school. K-12s going back to school is an important step in getting back to normal.

If teachers are ready to go with a game plan for getting some actual instructional time in in those four weeks, I would be all for it but my guess is it will be four weeks of watching videos and making the time pass...

Many people are forgetting that just about every kid in public school is a nine weeks behind on where they should be for advancement. Some might have some help at home but most do not.

no kids in the U.S. are going back to school this year. no one will have big enough nuts to make that call.

Yeah my kids got their assignments last Monday, finished them last Friday and now have very little going on. The virtual learning is pretty much a joke and a check block...

Luckily for my kids, I like several of their subjects and they are getting extra instructional time.

why?

children are not at danger on this

Sweden has kept schools open, and we are not seeing any negative consequences from that

my take is that he should opt for May 4th

shows he made a strong decision; yet gives him ample time to see what happens from here

IF things stay like they are; get them in class

IF things deteriorate, reverse the decision

have you been sleeping for 30 years? unless there's a "cure" or vaccine, these kids aren't gonna be ordered to go back to public gatherings. lawyers will eat that shite up.

now.........i'm not saying i agree with it. just that i know how lawyers are.

I respect your valid opinion, but I believe you are wrong. Some states (obviously not all) will go back this year. I think you'll be surprised.

We shall see. One thing to consider is that the teachers unions are very likely to fight against reopening the school. The rationale will be to "protect the children", but the actual reason will be because they don't want to go back to full time work this close to the summer break.

Now, I'm not saying teacher aren't working at all during this. That's not true and unfair. But to a person, every teacher I have spoken with admits they are working less (to varying degrees) that they did previously. All, while incurring NO risk of reduced salary or benefits.

Plus, if the state colleges have already made the decisions to restriction on campus activities for the rest of the spring semester (like LSU has), I doubt government officials will force younger students to resume on campus activities.

What about teachers and staff?

fair question

tje answer is obvious, reassign those at high risk, keep them quarantined, or at least separated from others

let those with minimal risk back in the classroom
