Today is Labor Day. It was never a holiday for small farmers in the USA.

It was a day of work before the start of school.
Labor Day is the first holiday granted by the US government to labor unions, which are now the bitch of the US government.
Remember this as you grill/ smoke your meat, which was likely processed by a Chinese owned company if you bought it from a supermarket or wholesale warehouse.
Enjoy the fruits of your labor.

If you’re a dairy farmer you never get a holiday.

The only people more confused by a holiday than left wingers on Labor day are the inner city hoods on Fathers day.

I’m a sugarcane farmer. We’re working today. We often work Christmas day as well. The only holiday we usually take off is Easter.
Other than that, if it’s not raining, we’re rolling.

What do you guys do when the temps get below freezing? Also is your growing season year round like it is in South Florida for sugarcane?

As a worker who succeeded in seizing the means of production I'll be spending part of this Labor Day at my small business getting caught up on some admin stuff.
Then I'm going to day drink and eat meat.

We start planting in late July or early August depending on stalk height. It’ll grow until a probable Winter frost burns it’s leaves, then it’ll restart in Spring. Harvest begins in late September.
It’s not often we get a hard freeze. When we do, we usually only have dead batteries and frozen scrolls on our harvesters which can be solved with jumper cables and acetylene torches respectively.
A hard enough freeze would force the cane to ripen, which is beneficial. But if it’s an early freeze followed by warm Louisiana weather, the cane will spoil progressively until the mills ultimately reject it. A rare nightmare, but a nightmare nonetheless.
