Do people just keep forgetting that Apple and Google control the gates of the entire app ecosystem?
It doesn't matter how many alternatives to FB and Twiter are created - if you don't play by Apple and Google's rules, the app gets delisted and banned.
And if your app isn't readily available for anyone to download on an iPhone or an Android device, then it's not going to grow or ever become a meaningful competitor to other social media giants.

Good point. Isn’t that the basic premise of his lawsuit against Apple and Google though? Seems like if they block him it would help his case.
