Tim Cook May Have Just Ended Facebook
Looks like it's no more Mr. Nice Guy.
BY JUSTIN BARISO @JUSTINJBARISO
quote:
In a recent speech at Brussels' International Data Privacy Day, Apple CEO Tim Cook went on the offensive against Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook. Cook's speech seems to be a direct response to Facebook's recent attack on Apple, in which the world's largest social network took out full-page ads in several newspapers attacking Apple's new privacy changes. But what's most fascinating is that Cook took direct aim at Facebook without ever mentioning the company by name. Just check out the following excerpt:
Cooks comments
quote:
Technology does not need vast troves of personal data stitched together across dozens of websites and apps in order to succeed. Advertising existed and thrived for decades without it, and we're here today because the path of least resistance is rarely the path of wisdom. If a business is built on misleading users on data exploitation, on choices that are no choices at all, then it does not deserve our praise. It deserves reform. We should not look away from the bigger picture and a moment of rampant disinformation and conspiracy theory is juiced by algorithms. We can no longer turn a blind eye to a theory of technology that says all engagement is good engagement, the longer the better, and all with the goal of collecting as much data as possible. Too many are still asking the question, 'How much can we get away with?' When they need to be asking, 'What are the consequences?' What are the consequences of prioritizing conspiracy theories and violent incitement simply because of the high rates of engagement? What are the consequences of not just tolerating but rewarding content that undermines public trust in life-saving vaccinations? What are the consequences of seeing thousands of users joining extremist groups and then perpetuating an algorithm that recommends even more? It is long past time to stop pretending that this approach doesn't come with a cause. A polarization of lost trust, and yes, of violence. A social dilemma cannot be allowed to become a social catastrophe.
quote:
But collecting and selling all that data comes at great cost, as Cook highlights. "The end result of all of this is that you are no longer the customer," said Cook. "You are the product."

No fricking shite
And you don’t get paid
Step away

So, it’s a sensationalist headline that won’t really matter in the long run, and it was really just a cook passive-aggressively complaining about Facebook. Guess inc.com needed some clicks.

Interesting read. "Ended Facebook" implies his message, while true, will be leveraged to the masses. This followed by action by people representing the masses.
Unfortunately I do not see this happening. The masses will remain ignorant as MSM will not let the message out. Our representatives are already in the bag for big tech. It takes force to change inertia.

Whatever Cook comes up with will be exponentially worse.

He did help end Parler...

It warms my heart to see a left leaning organization go after another left leaning organization because their targeted advertising led to too much freedom of choice. Please tear each other down over your authoritarianism.

Tim must have just read Shoshana Zuboff's The Age of Surveillance Capitalism and been impacted by its message.
Probably just lip service to appeal to the fan boys though.

This man gets it
Turn divide and conquer against them

Yes.
Reading the excerpt, his bitch was more about giving users too much leeway to have free conversations than about the collection of the data. The later is simply the tool he is choosing to attack the former.

Yeah, not sure what to think about that. It's true, FB users are the product. It's also true that FB feeds off of manufacturing conflict.
And yet, I don't think I care for Cook's motivations here -- such as his displeasure with people discussing, rather than just taking, the vaccine. And of course "conspiracy theory" too often means anything that challenges the left wing narrative.

You do realize he is talking about the same conspiracy theories that you post on this very site, right?
Facebook’s data mining is evil, but I don’t think I want anyone in big tech limiting content based on what they “think” is disinformation or conspiracy. Or limiting my ability to see it on the platform. Tim Cook is not on the people’s side either. He’s probably just mad that Apple isn’t in on the massive revenue stream that Facebook created.

Yeah if you actually read that he’s basically saying that Zuckerberg doesn’t do enough to restrict free speech. It’s all bullshite theater to these liberal elitist sissies.

Of course you do, that's what all those free hours of entertainment is for.
Reminds me of what Don Draper said when Peggy walked into his office complaining that he never thanked her for all her work.
"That's what the money is for!"

I guess he could take FB out of the app store but I suspect the FB junkies would just dump their iPhone and go to Android. So that ain't happening. So, how does Tim end FB?

Ah, monolithic thinking...
I post on diverse topics
I may not be perceived to be “right” about everything, but I am willing to go “beyond the pale”
Including the “conspiracy” that SM is sinister by design
Some aspects of tech in general also apply
Keep in mind you are typing this after a global lockdown for a number skewing /perception illness while an election and stock market were recently “paused” and the capital of the country is increasingly militarized
And still, folks who question things are labeled...

Facebook will end because it simple isn’t cool. It is aging out already. It is a more successful MySpace now. Because of phones it will stick around for the aging group. Their market will continue to shrink as newer products come along. More products have replaced what Facebook was used for than any of the other apps.
