Thoughts on Mattis leaving

I know that Mattis knows more about war and war strategy than any man on earth. For that reason, it’s awesome to have him on our side. However, I think Mattis is just like George W. Bush, whom I personally can’t stand. The imperialistic, new world order, and warmongering ways of foreign policy need to go.
Mattis is at his best as a general in the field, not as the secretary of defense.

The military thrives when there is a war.
People are promoted when their is a war and get foreign service ribbons.
Defense companies make a lot of money selling weapons and supplies for war and to ship overseas deployed soldiers.
When there is no war all this dries up.
The military will also prefer there to be a war as mere training is boring. Defense companies and lobbyist prefer war.
Military people also don’t necessarily like giving up ground that has already been won.
Bottom line we can stay in Syria and Afghanistan and other countries another twenty years and achieve nothing more. When we leave it will fall apart and we have only wasted more money in the interim.

I think Mattis is of the opinion that with added resources, his men can “finish the job” once and for all.
Compare this to the friction between MacArthur and Truman after WWII when Mac wanted to go into North Korea and obliterate communism once and for all. Truman and Eisenhower had a different view.

I thought he would do more to chase out the trannies and get women out of combat roles. Disappointed in that.

I'd rather have Mattis than the Boeing defense contractor who will be temporarily taking over.

This is a stupid assertion. Great military leaders know that war is hell is not to be entered into lightly. Only foolish hawks want war. Powell did his best to dissuade W from Iraq. "If you do it, you own it!" That has certainly been true. You have to have an exit strategy and we had none. We are still paying for it with precious American lives and money.

Of course, but they aren't the military. The GOP has never met a defense contractor it didn't love. Further, Trump was thrilled with increased defense spending. It's shame we can't spend it on care for our veterans when they return home.

I agree, Truman firing MacArthur was a good move, albeit several years too late (although he was not president then), and 100s of thousands of lives too late.
The next war will be decided by who controls space, just ask chini who is putting sats in deep orbit, once a domain controlled by the US.

Yes, he should have fought the war perpetrated on the DOD by Billy/Bush/Barry. Why not ally with Russia against the rest of the islamo-fascist world ? Get the hell out of the ME and let them do the dirty work.

I care more about the lives lost and the psychological impact on our soldiers more than the money.

I can’t speak for all VAs, but the one in Charleston has been making efforts to recruit and retain the best mental health providers they can. We have open slots every day for walk-ins to receive treatment and we were a pioneering site for TeleMental Health, increasing Veteran access to treatment across the nation.
Plus, they hired me, so they must be doing something right.

Mattis is a war hawk. Showing his colors now.

No Disrespect to the Military Baws on this board but the Government-Military Complex is REAL. War is Money Period! The Contracts are BIG MONEY. It is what is is.

Much as I admire the man, his philosophy was that of occupation and his baby was the M.E. Once Trump decided to do what is right, and bring the troops home, his plan no longer coincides with what Mattis is brilliant at. So, time to move on.

He convinced trump to sell more debt to China by agreeing to sign a trillion $ omnibus bill.
Hoodwinked the Q thread/Chans in saying that there was clandestine funding for a wall via the military.
Trump signed it. I wonder just how cloudy that cigar and brandy room was where the deep state button pushers backslapped each other.
Again, there is still hope. The deep state cannot operate without its plebeian workforce.
In 2020, primary these ( frick, I hate saying it, but here goes....) cucks out of the GOP.

Solid, sensible post. The war mongering left will hate it.

Not ideal economically for the MIC. Hire them to build a wall. GTFO of the Middle East. That place has been a shite hole for 3000 years.

Seems to me Trump basically cut a deal with Erdogen about what the status quo will be in Syria and Mattis didn’t agree with it. Trump also has wanted is out of Afghanistan for some time. 17 years and ongoing and there isn’t really any good options for us besides to continue to garrison the country.

He knows about the old ways of war. Shanahan is being brought in to transition from droning brown people to vaporizing them with space lasers.

Any thoughts on anyone who hasn't been fired or quit yet?
It'd be refreshing to get some of these hot takes before they seem to be very conveniently timed.
