That sums it up well. He never was accepted and and is tired of being on the island of misfits. So, he falls in line with the people that are messed up like him because they are lonely and just need to fit in with something.

This is generally where the goths, trannies, etc gather together and form a club. They have to belong to something they feel and are rejected by everything normal.
