That sort of weight is an enormous strain on the body and it has an increasing impact as you age.
Aside from that, he got destroyed in his last run for the seat (got less than 6k votes while his R opponent got just over 12k). Doing a quick dig, I can't find any policy positions from him (which leads me to believe his positions aren't popular and he knows it).

Meet 'Big' John Illg, a Republican State Representative from Harahan. He's a great guy and a very good legislator. For many years, he has been known as ?ig', and the nickname is well-deserved. My guess is he's about 6'8" or 6'9" and over 500 pounds. He is Vice-Chair of the Retirement Committee, serves on the Appropriations Committee, and almost was elected Chairman of the House Republican Caucus.
In other words, size does not prevent someone from being a good legislator.
