I hear there’s a huge Cinco de mayo bash on Martha’s Vineyard this evening. All are welcome!!

If they want to celebrate Mexican Independence so badly then they probably should go back to Mexico. ICE just wants to reunite them with the country that they love so much.

Cinco de Mayo in the U.S. is just a huge marketing effort to push product. It's a bigger deal here than in Mexico.

Cinco de Mayo has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with Mexican independence

Exactly. It’s the anniversary of the defeat of the French at Puebla during the intervention—four decades after independence from Spain. A battle whose result was undone shortly thereafter and precipitated 3 years of Habsburg rule. Cinco de Mayo is a tequila marketing event.

Most major cities have a festival where they charge admission and vendors sell product.

Not absolutely nothing. It was the first victory in a long string of battles with the French….once the US got involved the French left.

I’m pretty sure Cinco De Mayo is a white Karen drinking holiday in the US like St Patty’s Day.
Mexicans ain’t worried.

Mexico was independent in the 1820’s. The first battle of Puebla was a minor victory in a losing war in the early 1860’s that didn’t even result in French occupation. Mexico was still independent, just with an Austrian emperor that they overthrew a few years later.
So no, it has nothing to do with Mexican independence that occurred almost two generations previously.

Yet occupied by the French until 1866.

Was not occupied or governed by the French. Weird hill to die on.
It would be like calling a successful skirmish that preceded the Battle of Bladensburg in the War of 1812 “American Independence Day”
