re: Things Aren't Looking Great For Trump In Supreme Court Tariff Arguments

Well, there were other laws he could have used to accomplish this. Court is going to say a blanket tariff is going too far and is not permissible under the statute. Will probably also say it usurps Congress's role in creating legislation.

Stop. He's not even a capitalist. Hes a mercantilist.
quote:
Mercantilism is a form of economic system and nationalist economic policy that is designed to maximize the exports and minimize the imports of an economy. It seeks to maximize the accumulation of resources within the country and use those resources for one-sided trade.
The concept aims to reduce a possible current account deficit or reach a current account surplus, and it includes measures aimed at accumulating monetary reserves by a positive balance of trade, especially of finished goods.
Donald Trump is a classic mercantilist.
quote:
It also reflects a deep undermining of capitalism by reducing the division of labor as production gets Balkanized and each country is forced to produce goods for which it does not have a comparative advantage. A reduction in the division of labor through reduced trade makes all of us poorer than we would otherwise be.

What economic indicator is telling you that manufacturing returning to our shores is some great, national emergency?
This is astonishing.
Do you realize that if China wanted to, they could CRIPPLE our entire infrastructure? All they have to do is turn off the spigot. They control way way too much of our pharma, tech, steel, rare earth metals, etc. Trump has been clear about this from the beginning and it's an emergency. That's why the tariffs went into effect immediately (and the Biden admin didn't even reverse the previous ones) without even bothering with congress or judicial. It's a serious serious problem. All you have to do is look up the recent computer processor crisis. That was one tiny part of one industry among several. His message has been consistent, bring manufacturing back to the US so no one can hold us over a barrel. Thank goodness he fought hard initially to get semiconductors here and that project is fortunately still moving forward.
I just can't believe people don't understand this

So after 6+ months, the admin FINALLY takes a position on the goal of these tariffs

Is it to raise revenue or to rebuild factories for making rubber dog shite?
He;s also thrown out that they are to force free trade which works against the rubberr dog shite factories.

quote:And this is the beauty of the tariffs. First, they've always been a TEMPORARY tool to begin to level the playing field. We've been getting taken advantage of because of corrupt US politicians and bureaucrats. Second, these industries will start to serve as anchors bringing other ancillary socioeconomic benefits with them.
the terms of trade are made more fair, U.S. manufactured items will replace imported goods. Tariff revenues will shrink, and U.S. domestic tax receipts will surge

He's a literal mercantilist, goober. Look up the definition, though I already gave it to you once.

I struggle to see how this one is going to be close. The same principles used to parry the excesses of the Biden administration are going to work against Trump here. Solid conservative justices are likely to rule on the law and not just who is in the White House.

At least they didn’t ask “what is a woman” because half the court can’t even answer that.

Right, nobody cares that he breaks the law or violates the constitution.
