Now even AOC and Ted Cruz and a few other congressmen are asking Silver to suspend all NBA activities in China.

LINK

quote:

In the letter, linked here and available below, the lawmakers criticize the NBA for failing to put “fundamental democratic rights ahead of profit” and for being ill-equipped to deal with the foreseeable “challenges of doing business in a country run by a repressive single party government.” The bipartisan group also makes four requests of Silver:

1. Build upon your statement of October 8 in which you said “the NBA will not put itself in a position of regulating what players, employees, and team owners say or will not say on these issues” by clarifying that (a) NBA players, staff, partners, and fans in the United States are American persons-as such, you support their right to express their opinions no matter the economic consequences, and (b) while the NBA will follow Chinese law in China, the Chinese Communist Party must respect that the association will abide by American laws and principles in its global operations, including by not conditioning employment on any guidelines of expression on international political issues.

2. Suspend NBA activities in China until government-controlled broadcasters and government-controlled commercial sponsors end their boycott of NBA activities and the selective treatment of the Houston Rockets, and emphasize that the association will stand unified in the face of future efforts by Chinese government-controlled entities to single out individual teams, players, or associates for boycotts or selective treatment.

3. Reevaluate the NBA’s training camp in Xinjiang, where up to a million Chinese citizens are held in concentration camps as part of a massive, government-run campaign of ethnoreligious repression.

4. Clarify in internal association documents that public commentary on international human rights repression-including in Tibet, Hong Kong, and Xinjiang-falls within expected standards of public behavior and expression.

Any business that lets its employees spout off "without regard to economic consequences" will not be a business for long. NBA needs to tell its teams to STFU about political issues, including Trump.

That being said, they bungled this China mess badly.

Corporate rights > Individual rights. People should lose their jobs for espousing views in their private lives that the corporation deems unfit. Morey must be fired for expressing a view on his personal twitter account while Popovich is praised for bashing the President while speaking in an official capacity. We must all bow to our corporate overlords.

You misconstrued my post. I was not championing the bs that Popovich and Kerr spew. They all need to realize they are public figures, STFU on TV and Twitter and do their jobs

That’s a fallacious argument; and anyway, espousing the ideals of our great nation and in turn supporting others who believe in kind, ought never be viewed as a negative. It is absolutely WRONG to place business before ethics. And it is even WORSE to place business with an authoritarian communist ethno-state before the ethics and democratic ideals of freedom of our nation.

What is wrong is corporations pressuring its employees to remain silent on such issues. China is utilizing corporations and threat of economic sanctions to silence dissent. They are using our economic system against us. This is a HUGE problem that no red-blooded American should be okay with.

Until Silver pulls out and then AOC hops on Twitter and talks about the catastrophic consequences of pulling out.

I agree. Hence the national spotlight. But visibility or no, my argument stands.

The NBA has become a bought and paid for propaganda agent of the Communist Chinese.

Look at what's happening and prove me wrong.

I miss it so little that I have watched one quarter of one game in the last two years and I used to be a Mavericks fan that lived and breathed for the games. I got tired of the politics, the over commercialization and the over reliance on 3 point shots and liberalization of the rules.

The NBA is a profit-maximizing capitalist company who happens to need the approval of Communist China to reach 600 million customers.

If you don’t like the actions that the free market is guiding the NBA to make, you can try to influence them as a customer (good luck!), or you can demand that your government do their job in defining a political position and passing laws to dissuade multinational companies from indirectly supporting totalitarian regimes.

Of course, passing laws has its own challenges: 1st amendment, polarized political system. Plus, government intervention tends to harm profits, an idea contrary to this administration’s fundamental values.

This is an exaggeration. If a person does not like the restrictions a business places on their ability to spout off, they can find a new job. To use an example, I would fully expect Bob Jones University to tell its professors that you cannot support pro-choice in any public way. If they do not like that, there are other colleges out there.

They could shut the NBA down and I wouldn't know unless it was posted here.
