Trump supported McCarthy for speaker. McCarthy didn't keep his promises that got him the speaker seat and Trump criticized him. How can you fault Trump for McCarthy not doing what he promised?

It’s true though to a certain extent. Traditionally being a conservative is about conserving the status quo. That’s become increasingly hard to do as the conservative movement has ceded more and more ground, but intestinally a lot of these guys are always going to be, as long as people are making money everything is fine.

MAGA/populism has traditionalist elements, but it’s not “conservative” in that sense. It’s about bringing down the governing order, ripping apart our trade agreements and alliances, and pretty much everything else that’s happened since World War II. It’s a rightwing revolutionary movement. It’s not saying everything is fine. It’s saying everything is intolerable and it’s time to blow it up.

So the divide is real, and while we may agree on policy from time to time, the worldviews underlying those policies are fundamentally different. You can see this at extremes where like some MAGA types want Trump to be made King, which will always frighten muh democracy muh republic types.
