Again...why would anyone quit something, when they don't have many better career options, because they are just "so damn good" at their job? That makes no sense.
I honestly don't think he did an amazing impression. I thought it was good enough though and with time, he could make it his own.

That’s one of the key skits I’m thinking of.
“This filet of fish? Aid from Italy! *moves it to a different tray* Sent to Somalia! *shoves it in his mouth* Intercepted by warlords!”

No. Just no.

Also I figured he may not like the direction they wanted to go and rather not do it than to do it poorly
Fair enough. I could maybe see that, but unlikely still.
I feel bad for him. Lorne has lost touch IMO. The show has had its ups and downs, but it seems to be in a tailspin right now.

I love Hammond, truly a gifted person. Sad to hear of his struggles. I had no idea.

Lots of problem seasons over the years which can be chalked up to a few specific types of mistakes.
1985-1986? Bad chemistry.
Very talented cast but getting something cohesive out a group including Robert Downey Jr, Randy Quaid, Joan Cusack, Damon Wayans, and Anthony Michael Hall was a problem. Hence why in the last episode Lorne had Billy Martin set the stafe on fire while only saving Jon Lovitz.
The Dick Ebersol years? Problems with management.
They let Eddie Murphy run wild, let Joe Piscapo ride on his coattails, and generally screwed over everyone else like Brad Hall, Tim Kazurinsky, Julia Louis Dreyfus, etc. because they wanted to ride Murphy while they could and force repeating characters who sucked just to fill airtime. And this was an era which had good writers like Barry Blaustein and Larry David too.
1994-1994? Shitty writing combined with an unbalanced cast due to departures.
They lost a bunch of mainstays like Phil Hartman, Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, etc over the previous few seasons and replaced them with people who didn’t work out like Chris Elliot, Janine Garofolo, etc.
The writers take particular blame here because a lot of them ended up on The Simpsons within 4 years and wrecked that show too.

Agreed.
“Mister” Steve Martin, Buck Henry, and John Goodman were all better than him.

Lorne loses touch about every 4-5 years.
His best single run since the 70s was 1986-1993 when he overloaded the cast with talent to the point where guys like Chris Rock could barely get material on the air because he was competing against Mike Myers, Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, and others.
Most other eras have about 1-2 key players like a Will Ferrell who eventually leave for Hollywood and then he gets in a rut until his next talent jackpot comes in.

He was so much better at Trump than Baldwin

I can agree with this. Canteen Boy is an example of how creepy his range can get - was epic of him to do that skit. His Trump is the worst recurring SNL character in history though. It’s terrible.

Norm MacDonalds Bob Dole was always my favourite SNL character. I’d say that Hartman as Clinton is #2

No doubt, Hammond was immensely talented. His is a very sad tale.

Yep!
Another good one Hammond did was Regis Philbin. Not a political one, but absolutely spot on, with the cadence and the sound.
Perfect.
