Apple 1984 Commerical

I was in my very late teens when this came out and still remember it vividly and how "radical" it was for the times.

It's eerily prophetic as I see people willing giving up their rights and chastise people for daring to have a cough in public.

Who was around when this came out?

Where is this going to end?

This largely considered the greatest commercial ever made. Ridley Scott directed it... AFTER he had alrwdy done Alien and Blade Runner, so his fee was probably damn near what he got to make a feature just a few yrs prior.

Say what you will, but there was just something about Jobs-Era Apple products that were different. They felt British yet not. Mainstream yet not mainstream.

He eventually sold his soul to cheap Chinese labor and the company is now just as bad as the "Big Brother" portyared in the commercial, but the stuff was special once, but never again.

Indeed. Jobs cared about customers getting a good product that was reliable and easy to use. When Scully took over, Macs lost their way until Jobs came back to release the iMac.

Even in the iPhone era when Jobs was still alive, when the phone would offer a software update, it was exciting because you knew something cool was about to be added to your phone.

Under Cook, everything has gone to crap, including Macs once again. Since his takeover, I dread iPhone updates because it just takes more control away from the user and the product isn't any better than before.

I bet you didn't know this, but that Apple commercial was so "radical", that some English guy named George Orwell wrote a book about it. The book character Syme was influenced by Steve Wozniack....

For the last paragraph, do you mean Tim Cook? Because I don't think Sculley has returned to Apple since first leaving.

Sculley did try to turn Apple into another IBM PC manufacturer, which resulted in crap product quality and turning the product development towards more of a bland, IBM PC Clone zombie-ness, as opposed to Jobs' desire for unique-looking products. But Sculley left Apple with almost $2 billion in the black, so he wasn't the worst of the "Three Stooges" that was bookended by Jobs.

No, the worst were the two that succeeded Sculley in Spindler and Amelio. There was never any clear identity path for these guys - Apple lost its way. Under Spindler and Amelio, Apple actively sought mergers with IBM, Phillips, and Sun Microsystems because they were losing money and unable to come up with ideas on how to turn the tide. Spindler was behind the failed Copland OS, and when Amelio took over, he tried to buy Be Inc. for their BeOS operating system, but the CEO of BE Inc. was a longtime friend of Spindler and insisted on more money than Apple was willing to pay. So they turned to Steve Jobs' NeXT computer company, which brought Jobs back to Apple.

Jobs then played a role in crashing Apple stock prices by selling off 1.5 million shares, and started an internal coup to oust Amelio and retake the Apple CEO position. The rest is history.

Jobs had a great sense of vision for Apple's products and how to market his products in a way that made them appear totally unique and separate from competitors' products - even products that often were better made or with more features. One classic example of Jobs' efforts in marketing the iPod, was during the era of digital music players, and the creation of online "podcasts".

For about 5-7 years, these podcasts, and their advertisements for podcasts, started proliferating all over the internet on websites. And the ubiquitous saying, "download today on your iPod or MP3 Player".

That was Steve Jobs, and it was almost a subliminal marketing ploy. iPods have ALWAYS - since the very first generation player - supported the MP3 audio format. And while it is not the default iTunes option for ripping music from CDs onto your iPod, there was always an option to rip and download music in the MP3 format.

So technically, iPods have always been "MP3 Players". But if you ever saw those ads saying "your iPod OR MP3 player" - that was Jobs' doing. He always wanted his iPods to be regarded as something above and beyond its' competitors, even if mostly they never were.

That was the type of energy that Jobs brought to Apple.....

Good post, by the way.

Unrelated, I once had a PC guy tell me, "I've never understood you Mac people. It's like you buy a Corvette, and don't care work on what's under the hood."

I couldn't have agreed more. If I had a Vette, I wouldn't care about what was under the hood. I'd just want to get in the dang thing and drive like the wind, which is exactly what you could do with a Mac without knowing anything about engines.
