For a short answer to all your questions I'm gonna go back to the self esteem movement of the 1960s when Benjamin Spock taught us how to raise children. It's no longer important that people are competent and make good choices. The most important thing is that people feel good about themselves.

When someone spouts stupid isth... we need to not answer back with more anger, but rather simply ask: "Why?".
Then observe how they can't answer "Why" we should do something.
