As in people go to college now as more of an attempt to “get out of work” like ditch digging/plumbing and/or to attain prestige because they are insecure...

OBVIOUSLY there are exceptions to this but:

Most aren’t going because they are the best and brightest. They are going for the above reasons plus that’s just what’s “expected”

Meaning the whole point of college was to go with the intent of pursuing and specializing in some field of knowledge. Now it’s just high school 2.0 with an addendum for the really insecure/slower people to get PhDs if they stick around and avoid work.

Are you a plumber, electrician or have a 100 month f150 payment?

This. 30 somethings in college for 14+ years getting their PHd's to have a 60-70k/year job, but still supported by their parents. Basically, people refusing to grow up.

I'm an exception (engineering degree), but I get what you're saying. My son is proving to be pretty bright, so we're encouraging him to go to college. We will, however, steer him away from liberal arts degree that don't lead to productive careers.

If he wants to major in sociology or journalism, he's on his own.

There definitely exists a subset of people like you describe bit not as large as you suggest. Most go to college with unrealistic hopes and expectations. They end up quitting or getting a worthless degrees because they didn't realize soon enough that they were academically subpar.

I think you Are close to having a great point but are missing the mark.

The societal view that anything but college is a failure is bad.

Vocational colleges, training schools and even on the job training programs can be much better investments than a batchelors in whatever random liberal arts major you pick.

Also If a HS seniors primary goal is to have the “college experience” then they are setting up to fail.

ok worker, you’re right, but the system supports it. We need accountants, lawyers, and doctors so we can keep building the world.

It’s not if you choose a good hiring and paying major, go to a college with a reasonable program for your major with a reasonable cost instead of getting overwhelmed by debt, and have a plan of paying your loans back.

Ahhh...98.9% of all 18-22 year olds are utterly unemployable. Might as well try the college thing if they can afford it.

People who go to college need to be realistic. You can't get a degree in art history and expect to land a job making $80k. frick you won't land a job at all. You need to pursue a field of study that you can develop a career in, which doesn't always require a PhD.

But I agree for the most part, that people who are in college 15 years going after a PhD are doing all they can to avoid work.

I have the opposite mindset. Took me 5 years to finish college, aint no way in hell I was going any longer. I wanted to get to work

I get tired of hearing about student loan debt. Don't borrow money for a crumby degree that doesn't provide financial security. It's that simple.

I did my time in college because I knew it would pay off money-wise in the long run and it has.

Never once did I view it as "getting an education". Now I'm no engineer, but except for a few things in my major, I came out knowing the same shite I knew going in. And even the shite I learned I could have self taught by buying a book or reading online. But the reality is that you need that piece of paper to get the good jobs, especially in a field that interest you.

i'm kind of in a subset myself. I went to school, got a business degree and have been working for about 4 years. Hate my office job.

I talked myself out of studying psychology while in college because I got scared of all the school. Now I am looking at going back to do a 4 year PhD program to hopefully be a therapist and researcher.

Bottom line.... RUN YOUR OWN RACE

My advice to my kids will be to have a plan very simply. At some point we decided that we should not be burdening 18-year-olds with decision making about their future.

If you want to go to college and have the ability to that’s awesome but you have to have a plan for a functional degree that has the potential to yield A career.

Ditto. Daughter headed off to Oklahoma (going to be fricking weird tailgating at OU games, I'm here to tell you) and we're pushing her towards business communications and trade with an eye towards working in the state department on trade policy or in international trade for businesses.

It doesn't create morons, it's just a place that professors put personal bias into classes that feed the ignorance that is eating it. College is good because learning something, is better than nothing at all. It is most definitely ran by people who say ignorant shite who are educators.

I had a class yesterday and was very surprised that the professor gave the lesson when recent happenings countered her lecture.

That's ignorant. Plumbers and Electricians pay cash for their King Ranch's.
