Even part time or non essential employees? Even so, how many have asked or who would deny that request?

No they don't. There are certain jobs off limits depending on position you hold, mainly centered around conflict of interest issues. There are also a very small subset of positions that require approval, but they tend to be very high-level senior positions. Again to make sure there is no conflict of interest.

Your average civil service bubba can go get a second job whenever they want without permission.

The small subset of federal employees that have to get permission for a second job damn sure aren't the ones worried about not getting a paycheck or two.

I don't know...maybe get a part time job? Thats what Joe Sweatsock has to do. Why do these government flunkies think that the taxpayers owe them money to live on?? Get a job.

Most government employees aren't allowed to do that.

I was never allowed to when I worked on a nasa contract and it was tightly guarded. My friends in DC can't. Do you have a link?

You were a civil service employee? The way you worded this makes it sound like you were a contractor.

If you were civil service, what was your job role?

In most cases, it's perfectly fine and legal for government employees to take a second job. Some moonlighting opportunities, however, are off-limits. Most governments and government agencies ban second jobs that create a conflict of interest or interfere with your government work. Whether you're a federal, state or local government employee, find out your employer's policies before you accept any outside offers.

quote:

A government employee's ability to work a second job depends on a number of circumstances, including the type of job. For example, suppose you work for a federal agency that pays for a research project and oversees the contractor's research. If the contractor offers you a second job, taking it would be a conflict of interest. The federal government's policy is that you can't take the job unless you recuse yourself from all related government work. If your federal superiors decide you can't fulfill your duties if you recuse yourself, you'll have to find somewhere else to moonlight. Even the appearance of a conflict of interest is unacceptable. Conflict-of-interest rules at lower levels of government follow the same general principles.

quote:

Some government agencies require prior approval before employees can take a second job. For example, the U.S. Department of Agriculture requires written approval for outside jobs, but only from employees who have to file financial disclosure statements. These would include employees with a high level of authority or lower-level workers with influence over contracting or procurement.

The shutdown demonstrates the government is too centralized. Too much power has been accumulated in DC and surrounding areas. It’s evident during shutdowns when DC acts like the world is ending and the rest of America yawns.

Wouldn't it have been easier to do with republicans in control of the house?

Fake news!

I think the democrats currently have the stronger position. they just won the house, so they can rabble rabble a bit. They also know that if they give here, they will have to give on anything trump asks for as he will just shut down the gov't.

I would say if this does stretch for months and Rs don't cave, then Ds will be under tremendous pressure.

800k people are out of work right now. Don't care what side of these fence people are on, hard working Americans are out of a job and cannot provide for their families. They have mortgages, car notes, kids tuition etc just like the people on this board making fun of them

...but it doesn't affect 99% of this board so no one will care

They know full well that "shutdowns" happen. Plan for it.

Why are they special? If my employer shut down for a few weeks or months, why do I deserve a check on time?

You obviously haven't worked for/with many civil service employees.

And every one of them will receive 100% of their pay when this is over.

If you're a Democrat the shutdown is Trump's fault and there's no changing your mind.

If you're a Trump supporter the shutdown is the Democrat's fault and there's no changing your mind.
