Again, do you want the real, complicated history, or do you want some convenient negation to serve in the place of the original story?
The convenient negation is RP reenacting an event.

Nope. The Smithsonian at one time had a great exhibit on Parks, as she did not intend to start a boycott that day. What you seem to be missing is that there was a spirit of organizing around the few means of political leverage black people had.
Again, black American political activism in the 1950's took a great deal of bravery. I'm confused as to what you think the actual facts are or is this another thing where you take an insanely stupid position and never back down despite knowing nothing about the events in question?

Really?

Yes really, you intensely ignorant Muppet. From the Smithsonian website.
Secondly, before you go on your usual course of not answering anything directly, think for a moment. Did Parks know her actions were going to cause a boycott? Think for a moment you unbelievable moron.
quote:
Parks was not the first to refuse to give up her seat, nor the first to be arrested. Skilled in grassroots organizing, she was aware of the potential consequences of her act of civil disobedience. In addition to being a seamstress, she was also a respected community activist. Not only was she a member of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), but she had also served as the local chapter’s secretary for many years and had been working on the desegregation of the city’s schools. In the summer of 1955 she had participated in a workshop on community activism at the Highlander Folk School (now the Highlander Research and Education Center), where she was photographed by Ida Berman.
As Parks later explained, “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in.

She certainly hoped so.
And that's not a bad thing.
Misrepresenting the history and facts of the situation is what I disagree with.

You don't have enough familiarity with even the basic aspects of the Civil Rights Movement to make that determination. You understand that, right?

Never allow AI to draw conclusions for you.
Just looking for a brief summation
quote:Well. . .considering the book you cited claims she rescued over 300. . .yeah
Only...
quote:Same. I have written papers on it for postgrad
I've read the original book, long ago
quote:Because it isn't all her recollections. The letters weren't written by her, she was illiterate.
I'm unsure how later claims change the original recollections in a way where she isn't an inspiring American
They were a rush job by the author, designed to make money for Harriet. The author was leaving for Europe and agreed to shite something out for some Senator or Congressman, I don't remember which. Integrity was not a concern
quote:unimportant
I've never seen the modern movies, so I'm unsure what stupid embellishments were added or why.
quote:Depends on what you think the core of the story is, I suppose.
But the core of the story was most definitely not invented by communists.
Most of what people know of her is a complete fabrication.
She did escape slavery top prevent being sold, utilizing the ALREADY existing underground railroad.
She made about a dozen more trips to get family members back
She served as a scout and a nurse for black troops in the Civil War.
Important to note, that even if the memoirs were faithful to Harriet's words (they are not). Memoirs usually make shite history. People like to embellish their own achievements
There is a reason why Wyatt Earp is so controversial a figure. Nearly everything we know about him, he wrote.

I have unfortunately read your posts, so I have a very good idea. Are you about to regale me with a new reading of Dubois's Black Reconstruction in America?

Why would I do that? You're going off the rails.

When she was asked to pushback, she refused and was arrested.
Did she intend for a boycott? Probably, but can't really be certain. She 100% intended to be arrested when she got on that bus that day.
No genuine historian disputes that fact.

I used to work with a professor who rightfully said to a class that at the height of chattel slavery in America, less than 3% of white people owned slaves, and most slave owners owned less than 10. A black girl went crazy with complaints and he had to apologize.

It is more true to say that Parks actions were the spark for a flame that was waiting to be kindled. See Jo Ann Robinson's letter to Montgomery's mayor.

The problem, as stated in the link to Syracuse I produced earlier, is that the Civil Rights era has produced too many mythological figures.
Primarily due to the refusal of historians to treat them as historical figures. Instead, it is deemed more important to treat said figures similarly to what Alex Haley called "a myth we can believe in"
To the degree that if you point out discrepancies, people get REALLY angry. This thread is a good example
