While everyone was looking there but not here

he FCC voted today on a plan that gives the Federal government full control over the Internet. The plan passed by a 3-2 margin. A press release posted immediately after the meeting stated, in part, “Under the new rules, the Commission can investigate possible instances of discrimination of broadband access, work with companies to solve problems, facilitate mediation, and, when necessary, penalize companies for violating the rules. The FCC will review consumer complaints of digital discrimination of access through an improved consumer complaint portal and staff will meet monthly to assess trends in complaint patterns. Finally, the Commission adopted model policies and best practices that will support states, local and Tribal governments in their efforts to combat digital discrimination.”
quote:
The decision means that the Biden Administration is well on its way to implementing the plan that FCC commissioner Brendan Carr said “…reads like a planning document drawn up in the faculty lounge of a university’s Soviet Studies Department.” Commissioner Carr sent out his letter of dissent last week to warn the public about this “unlawful power grab” that “chooses central planning over free market capitalism.”

If this were just about ensuring that everyone had access to information equally, it wouldn't be such a big deal. Those of us who have been around for a while know that it will morph into something far more sinister.

Don’t like this at all, but let’s not pretend that cable/internet companies operate in a free market.

The government steps in and takes over? How perfect! Never known it to fail except for 100% of the time.

Come on man, our benevolent overlords just want what is best for us... No way they will overreach and turn the internets against us...

Glenn Beck was talking about this for a week or so prior to it happening. One would think Elon knew too and doesn't seem to have said anything. Wonder why.

Damn. If you don't already use an email service in switzerland and use a vpn, you better start now. It's about the only protection from the Marxists.

So what is the FCC for if they are going to give their powers away?
Sounds like another govt entity on the chopping block.

This barely makes a ripple today but ten years from now this will be a prominent hinderance to Freedom.
It was decided by 5 people in a 3-2 vote.
This is NOT how life changing rules are supposed to come into play.

And yet, these rules have been ceded by Congress to agencies which use them to control our lives and limit our freedoms...

If internet access is a right,
then shouldn't having a laptop or tablet also be a right?

Starlink will be immune, or least can be to all this crap if needed. They have zero physical ability to touch the infrastructure, and it would take a pretty drastic step to outlaw the use of Starlink equipment. Musk can move HQ operations out of the USA if needed and there are plenty of countries that will welcome him.
The US government cannot cutoff SpaceX either, they are the most dependable space launch company on the planet and the governments go to for launches now. Once again, SpaceX is private. Should the government harass too much, all the intellectual property can transition to a more welcoming country. Would decimate US Space exploration and dominance.

I have Starlink on my list of "look into "to-dos" for sure.
Any good threads on here about how it actually works and if currently cost efficient for the everyday person yet?
I'm assuming from your post, it is out of the view of govt overwatch and spying like the NSA?
