I thought that under a pardon, you no longer are granted 5th amendment protection. There should be no reason to need it.

2 things:
Possible state charges not covered
Possible issues of validity of pardon
His problem is that:
1) he gave a statement after being placed under oath and then asserted the privilege (that's a no no)
2) blanket assertions of privilege are not allowed.
