I know this is untrue. I know people here know this is untrue. But people cherry pick facts to argue that our system is not broken, but that the system itself is bad because it was built on slave labor.

Has any site written a good article that refutes this notion? I work in the medical field and I deal with stupid white women who spout this garbage. I need a good cogent source for reference.

You could just have them try to substantiate their claim.

If we had picked our own cotton, we would be driving sky-cars and living in cloud cities by now.

Yes, I know that's a cynical take, but Current Year has simply forced me to look at things much differently than I would like.

Pennsylvania outlawed slavery in 1782 before the United States was even a country.

Most of the US was built by Italians and Irish.

The best thing to do is just say slaves were replaced by machines and society has evolved; the origin of a system doesn’t make it inherently bad.

Their premise is false but you’ll never convince a woman her opinion is wrong, but you can convince her it’s irrelevant.

Most of what was built by slaves and much of the wealth acquired through slave labor was destroyed in the Civil War and during Reconstruction.

It's simply not true. Most people did not own slaves and most buildings and structures back then were not built by slaves.

If I knew it'd be this much trouble, I'd have picked my own damn cotton!

Human history is built on slave labor. There is nothing special about the slavery in America. Hell, there is still slavery alive and well today.

Why not just try a simple acknowledgment of the slightly more complex facts.

Was the American system built entirely upon slave labor? Of course not.

Was it built in part upon slave labor? Of course.

Only a complete idiot would deny either fact.

A lot of people caught wind early on - way before the Civil War - that slave labor was inferior in many ways to paid labor. Workers incentivized by pay were far more motivated to put in a full, honest day of hard work. That's one of the reasons the North started outstripping the south in economic development.

The idea that America "was built by slaves" is ridiculous. If that's the case, then WTF were all the white (and free black) people doing up until slavery was abolished? Chillin' on the front porch all day watching slaves build everything? Pretty incredible that slaves, who were intentionally deprived of education, could build intricate structures like town halls and churches.

Most great societies throughout history were. Fact.
America is the least of those evils compared to egypt, rome, ect. Still doesn't make it right, but its the truth.

So was pretty much every other civilization on the face of the planet. Nobody has any room to criticize the U.S. for that. They should look in a mirror first.

British people trying to take the moral high ground is always amusing to me, considering their entire modern history essentially centers around religious persecution, starting wars with France, and colonialism/slavery (slavery wasn't abolished in British colonies until 1833).

Things sure would be different, that’s for sure. We’d give up peanut butter, but I could have a shite at pro football or basketball. Good trade off!

Just point out that only a few in the South actually profited from slave labor, and they lost everything in the mid 1860s.
Slavery was a net cost to America.
