The Afghanistan war has been the most controversial war in US history. We have gone through four presidents who have spent too much time there.
quote:

President George W. Bush signs into law a joint resolution authorizing the use of force against those responsible for attacking the United States on 9/11. This joint resolution will later be cited by the Bush administration as legal rationale for its decision to take sweeping measures to combat terrorism, from invading Afghanistan, to eavesdropping on U.S. citizens without a court order, to standing up the detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
quote:

New U.S. president Barack Obama announces plans to send seventeen thousand more troops to the war zone. Obama reaffirms campaign statements that Afghanistan is the more important U.S. front against terrorist forces. He says the United States will stick to a timetable to draw down most combat forces from Iraq by the end of 2011. As of January 2009 the Pentagon has thirty-seven thousand troops in Afghanistan, roughly divided between U.S. and NATO commands. Reinforcements focus on countering a “resurgent” Taliban and stemming the flow of foreign fighters over the Afghan-Pakistan border in the south. Speaking on the troop increase, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates describes the original mission in Afghanistan as “too broad” and calls for establishing limited goals such as preventing and limiting terrorist safe havens.

One of the biggest f ups in American history.

Do you even Vietnam bro?

Look, I want to end it yesterday. But the American people do not even care about it on a day to day basis.

You’re comparing war in Vietnam to the Middle East and that is very different. That’s not Apple and Oranges.

I have been watching a show from an airborne unit stationed in east Afghanistan during the conflict. I come away with the conclusion that this war could not be won. Marching into villages to speak to citizens and then taking fire during returns to base. Sitting in fire bases taking fire. Patrols where the enemy is seldom spotted until the ambush occurs. IED’s causing casualties at many random scenes. This was a terrible waste of lives and resources. Perhaps we should have targeted obl solely and saved the nation building that failed.

Wouldn't the correct analogy be that the two are in fact apples and oranges?

What was even the nominal goal of the war?

Central and South Asia, not the Middle East. And I am an Afghanistan veteran. It is a conflict that is long overdue for coming to an end. But unless you lived during the Vietnam conflict (which I did) there is no comparison in terms of controversy.

Anyone that thinks that Afghanistan has even close to the controversy that Vietnam has is ignorant.

At the time I had a blast when I was there.

I’ve lost several friends there.

It’s a lot like Vietnam. I was an AH-64 pilot in RC-E we were responsible for the same areas that are featured in Restrepo and the Outpost. It was body count city. That’s all we cared about. We would go out one night and hit the Kunar/Pech/Kamdesh “shadow governor“ or anywhere in N2K2L. 4 nights later we are conducting another kinetic strike against the new “shadow governor”, et al.

The CIA / OGA ran a lot of ops with us. Not sure why they are Soldiers on the ground essentially, but every time I went out on mission with them you knew you were going to stack bodies, which for a 24 year old who felt invincible was exhilarating.

NO.

But it damn sure needs to end with troops on the ground. Use them drones and get the hell out now.
