It's also law that non-citizens here legally must carry papers to prove their status at all times.

This is an administration policy...not a law.
Trump and his gang have chosen to charge anyone with a federal crime who crosses the border illegally.
When that happens the kids are separated...previous administrations use to simply send families to immigration.

Citizen parents are separated fron their children all of the time. It’s called incarceration. Breaking the law has consequences and those consequences should not be determined by your family status.

A weak analogy on multiple fronts. First of all kids of incarcerated parents in American aren't typically put in detention camps. Also equating all border crossers with every day criminal offenders here is just downright ignorant

My analogy is weak? Citizen of this country typically have a home with relatives if one or both parents are incarcerated. Obviously illegal aliens are less likely to have accommodations.

It is a criminal offense to enter this country outside of the established processes. It is also a criminal offense to endanger a minor by smuggling them across the border.

It's a criminal act crossing illegally and we have no idea who it is crossing. The children are separated temporarily while the parents are checked out for their background to see if it is a first time crossing or a repeat. A first time offense is a misdemeanor and a repeat is a felony.
You may not like it because it tugs at you emotionally, but apparently the parents didn't give a damn about the kids breaking the law anyway, and that doesn't upset you. Maybe you're not upset at all over the kids and love the optics of this issue for political gain.
