Tell me again why DC needs to become a state??

It certainly can't be because 2 new Democrat Senators are virtually assured which in turn assures a Democrat controlled Senate for generations... right? LINK

I don't want DC to become a state, but if you use the population argument, why should Vermont and Wyoming have senators then?

I always believed that it was agreed that D.C. would not become a state, or become a part of another state, so no one state could claim to be the home of the national capital, or something like that. Kind of like Canberra in Australia...they couldn't agree if the capital should be Melbourne or Sydney, so they said frick it, we'll build one halfway between the two cities and call it the Australian Capital Territory.

The reason for not having DC be a state is because it is the capital and if it becomes a state, it is no longer fighting for the interests of the nation, but its own interests.

Give it back to Maryland, problem solved. Virginia already got their half back. Leave the WH and Capitol Hill in a much smaller district that has no permanent residents.

Would require a Constitutional Amendment. Should shrink the size of DC proper and allow either VA or MD absorb the population and violence.

Maryland would never allow that. It would immediately shift all power in the state to D.C. instead of Baltimore.

on its face it makes total sense because those ~ 700k people do not have representation
I agree the better answer is to give that population and its resulting change in representation to a neighboring state

Let Maryland reclaim all but the federal sites just like Virginia did for everything south of Potomac.
Eliminate 3 EV from DC and Maryland would go up 1 EV with someone like Cali or NY losing another.

Not the best argument against if you also believe Vermont and Wyoming should be states, because they have even less. In fact, 6 states are under 1M (and I believe 4 of them vote conservative).

To be honest, NY and California should have lost Electors based on the 2020 exodus from those states.
