One of America's most powerful labor unions has reported its first major donation to Republicans in two decades after meeting with former President Trump last month, but the party has yet to receive the money, sparking confusion.

Why it matters: The Teamsters' $45,000 donation to the Republican National Committee's convention fund, per Federal Election Commission reports, comes as Trump and President Biden vie for blue collar support in key swing states ahead of this year's election.

The reported contribution is not an endorsement. But it's a powerful statement from a union that's supported every Democratic presidential nominee since Al Gore.
It represents the Teamsters' first big donation to the RNC since 2004, the Washington Post reports.

First the president of the UAW admits some members might vote for Trump despite the unions endorsement of Biden and now the Teamsters are donating to republicans. We had bikers for Trump rallies in 2016. We had boat parades for Trump in 2020. Will 2024 be the year of Truckers for Trump rallies?

They'd be stupid not to

Biden is literally trying to put them out of jobs. But sheep follow what they are told to by their overlords.

Very true

It will be inaction from a second Biden term (God save us) that does it though.

Chinese automaker BYD has set its sights on Mexico as its quest for global expansion turns toward North America.

The Shenzhen-based car company, whose rapid growth has made it one of the world’s largest electric-vehicle sellers, is scouting locations in the country for a factory, from which it would consider exporting cars to the U.S., according to people familiar with the matter.

The plans show rising enthusiasm within China’s car industry for expansion to North America, despite the political risks. Building cars in Mexico for the U.S. would allow the automakers to avoid hefty import tariffs that would be applied if they were to send them directly from China.

CEOs at rival automakers have warned about the potential threat from China, with some suggesting the need for more government action to avert such competition in the U.S. These executives are concerned about what they see as a big cost advantage enjoyed by their Chinese competitors in EVs.

quote:

In recent weeks, executives at some Western car companies have become more vocal about the potential threat these Chinese firms pose to their own EV plans. Through a mix of engineering, government subsidies and lower labor costs, BYD and other China-based EV makers have been able to lure customers with stylish and technologically advanced EVs at attractive prices.

quote:

On Thursday, Carlos Tavares, chief executive of Chrysler-parent Stellantis, said it was imperative the global automaker be able to match its Chinese rivals on cost, or it would risk ceding ground. He described their expansion as “very powerful” and likened their potential entry in the U.S. to the arrival of the Japanese automakers in the 1970s and South Korean firms in the 1990s.

“You can see it in the European markets,” Tavares said during a conference call with analysts. “We may not want to see—a third time—the same movie.”

Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk has also expressed similar concerns, saying the Chinese companies have already had significant success outside of China and are now the “most competitive” in the world.

LINK

Without a pro-American worker administation the federal government taking steps to stop it (i.e. pursuing legal and regulatory actions to make sure the same tariff is applied to Chineses EVs made in Mexico as the ones made in China) Chinese EVs will begin entering the US market after 2025. That will kill the EV projects that Biden has promised the UAW and Biden's push for EVs will do serious harm to the IC automobile manufacturing. The UAW believes that Biden, democrats, and Wall Street will stick to promises to transition to EVs if Biden is reelected. However, Elon Musk and other executives see the writing on the wall. Hopefully the UAW members will see it too before November.

No but Warren Buffet did purchase 10% of the company in 2008.

Rank and file understand the threat in front of them. Management throws a bone out there to gauge the response from their members AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, the response to this from the DNC. The union might be super unhappy at what Dems are doing and they may want Biden out of there and someone more moderate in his place.

They also may have figured out that Biden is a puppet and Obama is pulling the strings from behind the scenes. Valerie Jarrett is CEO and a member of the board of directors of the Barack Obama Foundation. There's the actual seat of this government.

Somewhat tangential to this discussion, but why don't we set up some agreements with Cambodia and Vietnam with regard to manufacturing and importing things, whether it's tractors or cars or something else?

The talk seems to always revolve around China and Mexico. Cambodia is pretty low on cost per hour, and this graph below compares Vietnam to Mexico and China, and Vietnam is clearly cheaper.

Unfortunately he is the only presidential candidate in history to boost voter turnout for the opposing party.

What sort of "agreements" do you propose?

Vietnam and Cambodia are already taking some business from China.

This is the union placating its members much more than the union supporting Trump.

Someone needs to tell me how Chinese cars are different than Japanese, Korean or German when it comes to saving American jobs and businesses.

This is nothing new.

*To be clear, I was pissed foreigners were allowed to destroy our industrial base from the 1970s to now. This is just a continuation of it.

I tried to tell people Teamster membership support of Trump is pretty big. I know several of them. It's at the top where things get dicey. Sean O'Brien might be a different cat tho.
