Pittsburgh born and raised; so safe to say I'm a fan. Most of my family is done with them; the Rooney's have miked the city to benefit themselves for years and then to have (whether it was intended or not) the team spit on their values was a step too far.
I just can't believe that the Steelers would be so ham-fisted in their approach and create a PR nightmare like this; and then try and walk it all back. I thought they'd be better at the media game. Overall it's just comical. Then they made the biggest mistake of all, they went and lost in miserable fashion to an 0-2 team; ensuring everyone would be doubly pissed after the game. It looked like they spent more time planning what to do for the anthem than on the game.
As for me and the Steelers; I'll check back in with them and the rest of the NFL next year and see if they got their shite together and are done making a political circus out of everything.

His team and his coach made their choice.
Now they can live with the consequences.
frick them forever.

What a bunch of losers.

Shortsighted to say the least. Doesn't Pitt pretty much pride itself on being a blue collar city? Slapping that fan base in the face was a real bad move.

I really believe this is a case of just not thinking about the optics. I think Pittsburg was just trying to stay above the fray and not put players in a position where they had to decide whether to stand or kneel. They thought staying in the tunnel was the best move to avoid blowback.
I don't think the thought that it could be viewed as even more disrespectful crossed their mind. They didn't seem to think that just telling everyone to stand was the non-political choice.

who possibly thought this would look good for the Steelers, and to top it off for them to attack a war veteran who made the decision to stand

The solution to this problem was so simple way back when, it's mindboggling that Goodell and the owners were too stupid to think of it. The first time Kaepernick got attention for this, the simple solution would have been to issue this statement:
"The playing of the National Anthem will no longer be used as a vehicle for individual player protests. Effective immediately, the NFL will adopt the same procedure as the NCAA. The National Anthem will be played while both teams are still in the locker room."

I believe a dozen long term steelers fans should be selected randomly and he should shove his nose right up each arse for a full minute on the 50 yard line

Pittsburgh has changed A LOT over the past 30 years. Yes the blue collar pride is there, but it's not really a blue collar town anymore. That, said the political culture and climate is really unique in the city. It's a democrat town but oddly conservative. There is a liberal streak form having 6 universities in the city; but overall, it's struggling with the current progressive liberal flavor of being a democratic town.
Long story short; it's a town that while being democratic and having a progressive undercurrent; it's people are still mostly conservative individually and this kind of thing would get them pissed. It's an easy town to miscalculate the political winds and what the majority of people will accept.

46.7% of the country are Trump voters who respect the flag, military, and want respect for those things. Very passionate people.

They should have all came out and held their hands over their hearts during the national anthem while standing. They decided not to come out because some of the players were going to kneel.
