I don't see why that cannot be the case
It certainly was the case, until that idiot devil Dylan Roof shot up that church.
That was a game changer for relations between North and South, between whites and persons of color, between Republicans and Democrats. America will never be the same again.

How many people in New Orleans could tell you two details about Robert E. Lee or anyone from the civil war?

You could say the same about the trailer park crowd in much of back swamp Louisiana.

His job was to heal the nation after civil war. His stance reflected that.

Sorry, but it was worse for Jackson. Those idiots thought they were protesting Stonewall Jackson Square, not Andrew. That's how stupid this whole thing is.

Good riddance to General Lee.

There are probably more southern Confederate pride types who have little idea what they are supporting than there are people protesting statues. Real talk.

I wonder if Philippe II owned slaves. We know about Code Noir, so it might be safe to assume he did. It's obvious now that "New Orleans" itself is racist, and needs a new name.

After the war, as President of what is now Washington and Lee University, Lee supported President Andrew Johnson's program of Reconstruction and intersectional friendship, while opposing the Radical Republican proposals to give freed slaves the vote and take the vote away from ex-Confederates. He urged them to rethink their position between the North and the South, and the reintegration of former Confederates into the nation's political life. Lee became the great Southern hero of the War, a postwar icon of the "Lost Cause of the Confederacy" to some. But his popularity grew even in the North, especially after his death in 1870.[8] Barracks at West Point built in 1962 are named after him.

For the life of me, I can't/don't understand the love of a man that went to war against the United States of America. I would donate my time and labor in helping rid my birthplace of this blight, if given the opportunity.

To me this is about treason. The racial aspect is secondary.
That makes you a self-centered individual incapable of removing yourself from your myopic world view and considering the circumstances of another human. Context is VERY important, particularly when you consider the motivations of others. I would say it is MOST important.
The USA and people's attitudes towards it relative to their loyalty to their state are WAAAAYYYY different today than they were in the earlier days of our Nation. Open your eyes.

You had legless, armless veterans from both sides of the war attend ceremonies and reunions together, and displayed unbelievably powerful sentiments of reconciliation. The very people who were MOST affected by the war have LESS hate for southern soldiers than people in 2017.
It's absolutely stunning.
Perhaps they were more open-minded, or more intelligent.

Our country was founded by traitors, by your definition, nimrod.

Its a manufactured issue to cause outrage amongst certain people and joy among others. Mich's calculus is that he will benefit politically from this or the issue would have never been raised.

What I find humorous in this whole thing is that it won't help 'race relations' but harm it.
I'm 36. Never owned a slave. Never lived during segregation. Never thought a black was any different from me really.
The statues are about history, good or bad...but still history.
But this nonsense now makes me wonder what is the end game here? And even though I can guess the endgame, I wonder how smart this move is?
Because it does nothing but keep moving the goal posts toward 'reputations' for nothing I did.
In fact, I now have to see this news and get a pissed off feeling about this nonsense.
This isn't a melt. It's a gfy you stupid idiots. I ain't got time for this stupid shite.
The left has lost their minds. I'm ready to take them head on at this point.
