I've worked at a few of those myself, in different areas.
If he was hitching rides home, it was intentional, and his rides probably liked to go by the bars, shothouses, craps and card games.
There was always plenty of that stuff around the yards where I worked.

Reminds me of the common sob story scammers use at the gas pumps.
“Excuse me sir, I’m in town on business staying at the crappy motel up there. My boss isn’t in town yet to drive me somewhere but I need to get somewhere now. Can I have money for the bus?”

That was one confusing story. I still don't understand what her point was. That her and her mother were selfish coonts who made their hard working father walk to and from work after a long day?
