re: ST. George WINS Incorporation is a reality!

I hope that the taxpayers in the impacted area are ready for the tax increases that they are going to be hit with to pay for the legacy costs for teachers from EBR (and more revenue to assume costs to operate the schools), formation of a city council, the likely formation of a city court, costs to pay for new city employees, etc.

I bought a home in St. George after the 2019 vote to incorporate, and I've been following this issue the entire time. The only thing I can do, at this time, is ensure to not vote for any new millages.

It's never a conservative principle to want to create more government and increase taxes, and that's all the formation of this city has caused.

I would imagine that the majority of residents in the new city are just fine with paying higher taxes for usable public schools, services, and infrastructure as opposed to throwing a slightly lower amount of tax dollars into the flaming dumpster of the city-parish.


And by "i would imagine" I mean, "that is exactly why the signed the petition and voted to incorporate."

St. George is now the fifth largest city in the state of Louisiana, with an estimate of 86,316 people that reside within its boundaries. The $48 million that was included within that decision does not include any estimate for having to pay for an entire school system, a city council, a city court (because with the population of people now living within the city, it will now qualify for a new city court with all of the expense that comes along with that), legacy costs that the new school system will have to assume for teachers and other public employees, and other costs not factored into that $48 million.

New bonds will have to be issued (new debt obligations), which will lead to new millages being proposed, which will increase folks taxes. It's weird to see folks one day talk about cutting spending and smaller government, and then the very next day championing more government and higher taxes.

At what point does being principled even matter anymore if you can just switch it on and off?

Actually, it's a dollars and cents take. The incorporators pulled a complete bait and switch on the folks who voted in favor of incorporation.

I'd love to see this newly formed government run a city of almost 90,000 people with a budget of $48 million (that doesn't include the formation of an entire school system, a city government, or a city court, along with any legacy costs they're going to be responsible for paying).

You do realize that the City/Parish was required to put all tax monies that would have been St. George's into escrow since the filing of the notification of the petition. So the City will not be going from a standing start. It will have a shitton of $ to start with.
