This thread got me wondering: have any of you met a rhodesian immigrant before?

I work with a woman who's parents were Rhodesian. They moved to South Africa in the early 80's to get away from what was going on. Then, they moved to the UK from South Africa in the late 90's to escape the shite-show there. Most of her family lives in Las Vegas now.

Man she has some stories about Rhodesia and South Africa, it's fascinating and frightening all at the same time.

I used to work with one. She is a lawyer in Dallas and lives son on a farm outside of town. She and her family were farmers in Rhodesia and got the heck out of Dodge. A lovely person of crackling intellect. It's hard to imagine that any country would want people like her to leave, but leave she did.

Her name isn't Becky is it?

Dated a SA girl in the UK in the late 90s, same story.

My cousin's husband is one. He left Rhodesia as a kid and then emigrated to South Africa. Now he lives in the States. He can come across as a fairly liberal guy most of the time, until you pour a few drinks down his throat, then the conversation gets......interesting.

His family was one of the first English settlers in Southern Rhodesia, a farm family. I sometimes think that if given some weapons and opportunity he would take out most of Mugabe's people and half of Salisbury ( Harare) with no personal regard for himself.....but you have to get to the halfway point of a bottle of Jack Daniels for that conversation to start......great guy, though, tough dude

They definitely have stories to tell

White Rhodesians are called “whenwes” in South Africa and the UK because so many of their sentences start off as “when I was in Rhodesia”
