If tweet fails to load, click here. Like history in general, it isn’t good for the Dems
quote:
HISTORY LESSON ON YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD:
Just in case some of you young whippersnappers (& some older ones) didn’t know this.
It’s easy to check out, if you don’t believe it. Be sure and show it to your family and friends. They need a little history lesson on what’s what and it doesn’t matter whether you are Democrat or Republican.
Facts are FACTS.
Up until the 1980's, Social Security cards expressly stated the number and card were not to be used for identification purposes. Since nearly everyone in the United States now has a number, it became convenient to use it anyway and the "NOT FOR IDENTIFICATION" message was removed.
Franklin Roosevelt, a Democrat, introduced the Social Security (FICA) Program. His promises are in black, with updates in brackets.
1.) That participation in the Program would be completely voluntary [No longer voluntary],
2.) That the participants would only have to pay 1% of the first $1,400 of their annual Incomes into the Program [Now 7.65% on the first $90,000, and 15% on the first $90,000 if you’re self-employed],
3.) That the money the participants elected to put into the Program would be deductible from their income for tax purposes each year [No longer tax deductible]
4.) That the money the participants put into the independent ‘Trust Fund’ rather than into the general operating fund, and therefore, would only be used to fund the Social Security Retirement Program, and no other Government program [Under Johnson the money was moved to the General Fund and spent]
5.) That the annuity payments to the retirees would never be taxed as income [Under Clinton & Gore up to 85% of your Social Security can be taxed]. Since many of us have paid into FICA for years and are now receiving a Social Security check every month — and then finding that we are getting taxed on 85% of the money we paid to the Federal government to ‘put away’ — you may be interested in the following.
Q: Which Political Party took Social Security from the independent ‘Trust Fund’ and put it into the general fund so that Congress could spend it?
A: It was Lyndon Johnson and the democratically controlled House and Senate.
Q: Which Political Party eliminated the income tax deduction for Social Security (FICA) withholding?
A: The Democratic Party.
Q: Which Political Party started taxing Social Security annuities?
A: The Democratic Party, with Al Gore casting the ‘tie-breaking’ deciding vote as President of the Senate, while he was Vice President of the US
AND MY FAVORITE:
Q: Which Political Party decided to start giving annuity payments to immigrants?
A: That’s right! Jimmy Carter and the Democratic Party. Immigrants moved into this country, and at age 65, began to receive Social Security payments!
The Democratic Party gave these payments to them, even though they never paid a dime into it!
Now, after violating the original contract (FICA), the Democrats turn around and tell you that the Republicans want to take your Social Security away! And the worst part about it is uninformed citizens believe it!

Some good points, and it is not surprising to me that a program that takes money from US citizens by the government gets changed so that the citizens get less and the government gets more. Democrats and Republicans both do this.
One of your facts that is little know is the Social Security money being taken from the separate “Trust Fund” status to be included in the general operating budget of the government. This was cover to steal from SS and then use “projections” to claim it is going bankrupt, this is a really despicable trick.

Even FDR wouldn't recognize today's Social Security program.

On top of all of that, SS has a very poor to fraudulent return on investment. The interest paid on the "Trust Fund" is often below the rate of inflation.

SS for the feds is analogous to you getting a payday loan with the following arrangement:
• You tell Payday the amount you intend to borrow per month for ~45yrs.
• You'll use the loan money for 45yrs at your leisure with no cost.
• You determine the interest rate you'll eventually pay.
• Payday is required by law to participate on your terms.
• You assure Payday you'll start repaying the loan in monthly installments after 45yrs ... if they are still around to collect.
• Payday will refer to any repayments as a "benefit."
Uncle Sam ain't giving that up.
SS has been a "despicable trick" passed off as a retirement program since its inception. It was used to fund 30% of FDR's second term "New Deal" programs, and a large amount of subsequent WWII debt.

A lot of that isn't true.

It's actually still voluntary. There is no legal requirement to sign up for it. Trust me, I know.

That’s what the experts keep saying, but they’ll just raise the age to a point where most will die and never collect a penny. I’m amazed they haven’t raised the age of early retirement, but they may happen too.

So Democrats are evil? I already knew this.

Here's one...
Life expectancy in the USA in 1935 was 61.7 years.
SS started paying at 65.
It was (and remains) theft.

quote:For jobs covered by Social Security, payroll taxes were mandatory from the start; the program was only “voluntary” in the limited sense that some jobs were initially outside coverage.
Tell me what is not true that I wrote.
The original 1935 law taxed the first $3,000 of earnings, not $1,400, and expressly forbade deducting employee Social Security taxes for income tax purposes.
The SSTF was created in the 1930's. It functioned then as it does now, as a loan to the government. In exchange for an IOU, money was then spent on general fund programs.
Benefits taxation occurred in 1983.

You're not going to believe me. You should copy and paste the tweet you posted and ask, Grok, Gemini, Co-Pilot, or Claude to verify. I have no doubt they will all say the same thing. What you posted is largely false or intentionally misleading.
