At this point, everyone has seen enough examples of people fighting the cops and dying because of it.
While there are a few examples of cops straight fricking up; the take everyone should get from this is that theres a chance if you resist arrest, you could end up dead.

the fact he had a gun speaks to the parenting...
I am inclined to put all the blame there...though I know raising a teenager is one of the tougher challenges any parent will face in life

Old news. At 13, he knew right from wrong because he attemped to flee. His "mom" knew he was out doing stupid shite so, she killed him as far as I'm concerned.

Also if you are bored, Google NM State Patrol killed. He was requested by DHS to stop a guy. The bad guy gets out with a long gun and puts 6-7 rounds. Fortunately there is another video of the consequences of the assholes behavior.

I knew nothing about this story until I read it here last night, and that was my first thought as well, given I'm the father or a newly minted 14 year old as of this morning. There is ZERO chance my 13 year old was getting shot anywhere at 2:30 AM on any day , let alone a school night, unless we happened to be coming back late form someplace and he was asleep in the passenger's seat and we got shot at a gas station or something.
And no, already feeling the need to answer the numbskull who's going to ask it...being out at 2:30 AM on a school night ought not be punishable by death. But what continues to get missed is that there are tons of things you can do both as an individual and as a parent to help insure your own safety, and the safety of your loved ones. It takes some effort and some personal responsibility though, so that may be the problem for some.

You know as well as I do, that the issue is already in place if your 13 year old is getting up and leaving the house to be out at 2:30 in the morning on a school night. A kid that does that is one you raised that is capable of doing that.
I'm sure you're confident that your kids would never do that, right? So am I...because I did the work earlier in making sure they understood right and wrong and what actions were ok and what ones were not.
No kidding, I told my son this story just now at breakfast and I reminded him of the thing we talk about all the time..."giving your older self a present by making good choices today." He responded with, "I mean...what was he doing out that late? You know I'll stay up past the time I'm supposed to go to bed, but I'm not leaving the house! haha"
