Are you sure he isn't trying to tell you he wants to be your daughter?

First, you should be very proud of your son. He clearly loves his country!

I have a 13yr old and I would NOT want him to serve. Like you, 20 years ago I would have been enormously proud.

However, when you consider our proud military has been distorted by the endless wars of the military industrial complex... i wouldn’t support it.

To be a conservative type, governed by The UCMJ, serving under an ever more progressive chain of command, is a recipe for disaster.

My $0.02, there may be some top-level virtue signaling going on with the military right now because of the woke figs currently at the controller of the drooler-in-chief, but overall the US armed forces as an institution would be more of a safe bet than sending him off to learn from these freaks teaching at college. Teaches structure and discipline, and four years or whatever he decides thereafter, sounds like the Air Force will give him a head start if he wants to go to college later (at which point he'll have a better chance at shrugging off the woke indoctrination).

My dad wasn't too thrilled when I signed up for the Marines when Billy was CiC, but the grunts pretty much shrugged off the PC bullshite that he started at the time.

It's not worth it. He will be led by a commander-in-chief who will blunder into a war and cost the lives of more young people.

He graduates next year and wants to go Air Force for computer and data/intelligence stuff.
Best wishes to him. He can make it. But he has to stay with the values you passed along to him. Stay true to who he is.

Very good post. He has put thought into this for a couple years and done his research and such. I’ll support him in whatever decision he makes of course. I know he wants to serve and that makes me proud

Thanks, and in the spirit of full disclosure, I do not speak from a position of being a veteran of the military. I speak from a position of recurring regret over not having taken my chance. There is a rub though, particularly that perhaps I wouldn't have the beautiful family God ultimately blessed me with had I done so, but still even up until just a short time ago I would experience almost physical pangs of regret for not having done something I'd always thought I was maybe born to do. Maybe that's a little extreme sounding, but completely accurate.

Good point. I currently teach at a secular university. It’s a mess and ridiculous. It’s just about gotten unbearable. I’ve been offered a position at a well known Christian university here; same pay with slightly less benefits. I’m seriously considering it.

BTW....congrats on retirement and thanks for your service.

Are you looking to work or truly retire?

The only upside is that your son’s skills will be highly marketable after he leaves the military.

That fact that he won’t be laced with $60 to $80k in college debt is significant upside.

You did your part Pop, sounds like you raised a fine young man!

Thank you. He’s got a great head on his shoulders. But I know how much pressure there is to confirm in the military of course. I don’t want him confirming to this woke BS

I have applied for both non-profit and civil service work. A couple of interviews. No job yet. Was interviewed (informally) for a nice paying contractor job at Fort Bragg (we own a home in Fayetteville) and was offered the job on the spot. However, it was not a good fit for me (civilian personnel management, not a strength of mine). I turned it down. Looking to do volunteer work right now but will still keep my resumes going out.

Despite my frustrations over these past eight months, I am confident he can do it.
