Here is Murkowski's statement

commentator varad mehta and others making this basic, telling observation
quote:

Conspicuously missing from this statement is any declaration that she would vote against a nominee if there is one, either before or after the election.

Just because collins and Murks say they would be OPPOSED to it happening does not mean they would vote against a qualified nominee.

Murkowski will vote for anyone Trump appoints. I’m pretty confident in that

Buying their time so the confirmation vote will be after they're re-elected and they can then vote no.

Amy Barrett had nothing to do with the blocking of Obama's nomination.

I dont see how any of them can justify a No vote on Barrett. You might as well change your party affiliation.

Maybe so, but Collins is in a really tight spot

I will be shocked if she does not abstain from voting altogether, and I really don't know that I blame her

I have made the argument that this is all political, and I still believe that

Voting yes will likely cost Collins her seat, so the unfortunate truth is that an abstention or a flat out no vote is probably the smartest thing for her to do based on her situation

Romney & Murkowski?

are both straight up pieces of shite for even thinking about anything other than supporting the nominee

I think Murkowski went a little "woman" during the Kavanaugh thing and the barrage of rape stuff and FBI investigations and all that shite put her off.

She still wasnt going to be the decider though I do not think.

If its a scandal free woman what reason is she going to vote no?

I had that discussion last night. They may be opposed to the descision, but they don't make the call that a vote comes up. When the vote comes up, they will probably vote yes. Especially if it us a woman nominee (which is most likely).

So what happens if the election goes to the supreme court and the vote ends in a 4-4 tie? Do we have cowards like her to blame for that?

Collins said she would not vote before the election. That still gives her 2 months to vote AFTER the election.

She won’t have to abstain. McConnell is going to hold hearings before the election, and set a vote after the election, and before the AZ senate seat is sworn in in late November. None of Gardner, Collins or Murkowski will vote NO at that point. Their abstaining at that point, if they chose to, wont change the results.

The plan should be to hammer this home before the election because it may go to the supreme court

From watching politics in general for 60 years, and McConnell in particular for 30

I do not understand why this is this the conventional wisdom about Collins?

Democrats are not voting for Collins unless they are also voting for Trump. I'm not sure how big of a number that is in Maine, but I can't see a Democrat crossing party lines to vote for President, and not also for a Republican senator who is practically a Democrat anyway.

No Republican, or Democrat Trump Voter is voting for Collins if she votes No on Trump's nominee, or even if she takes the chicken shite way out and abstains.

The inability of GOPe candidates to understand that there is no mandate for them to do anything, and particularly for them to fail to back a conservative judicial nominee - is just completely baffling to me.

ETA - TLDR: It would be safer for Collins to vote Yes on whoever Trump Nominates. She needs Trump to win.

your logic is absolutely sound and I am happy to acknowledge that I might be wrong on this

however, I am pretty sure that SHE believes that what I am saying is true, and at the end of the day, that is what matters
