You may get stoned for that. But I'll join you. Just from surface level knowledge of the facts available now, doesn't make sense to me that it would be a state sanctioned job. Like you said, hurts their cause at a time when there's already notable anger and suspicion still smoldering about the murdered journalist. Plus, an official job would seem to be more extensive and better outfitted. JMO

There are many small things that can affect the current belief of the public. Something like the word "arrested". When most people hear "arrested" they think arrested for a crime. But oftentimes you hear "detained" instead of arrested which carries a bit of a different perception, "detained for questioning".
