You guys are ignoring two key components of this. One is the strategic nature of some manufacturing. For example, the refining of rare earths. China has cornered this market through predatory practices in order to gain power over us. Two China, and other nations are engaged in predatory trade which distort the free trade dynamic you champion. It’s fine to expose Americans to competition abroad. And that competition sorts out the efficiencies of the markets via the invisible hand. But when other nations are putting thumbs on the scale we should retaliate. The purpose of that retaliation should be to get all thumbs off the scale.
I’ll mention another thing. Overseas competition, and offshoring, is fine, but it has to be at an acceptable pace. The good and bad of it is in the velocity. Too much too fast and the Americans affected by it can’t adjust quickly enough.
Our policies should be free trade in general, but protectionism when the dislocation is too fast, other countries are cheating, and when strategic interests are in play. Also, we should recognize other countries strategic interests and not retaliate when their trade policies protect that.
In general, I think Trump’s trade aggressions were overdue. They are mostly rebalancing, and he is using them to force allies to shoulder defense costs and to raise a hidden tax to control deficits. (I’d rather cut spending, but you know how that goes).

This is what we call the "national security" justification.
It's basically the same as "infrastructure" for DEMs under Biden, where they use the label for anything they want. Remember "child care is infrastructure"?
It's not that there isn't some truth in what you're saying, but the definition has to be VERY limited and VERY bright line. No malleability whatsoever can be permitted and the subsidizing has to also be clear. Otherwise there will be no rules and absurdity will reign.

We typically benefit from this, so I don't have a problem with it.
If China wants to take money from its citizens to subsidize goods so that we pay less, then we get a double benefit in that scenario.
The only way you can spin this as a negative is if you over-value the underlying economic actions of the Chinese production, which is the theme with MAGA/AF talking points and manufacturing. We are too developed for that lower-level manufaccturing (see the quoted language above).
