For the past 30 years Shreveport's population has been pretty much stagnant. Right around 200,000 people or less.

The city has grown, not so much in population, but in land mass and boundaries. Mainly to the south. Could that growth eventually lead to the creation of another city in Caddo Parish ... to the south?

quote:

The Grove at Garret Farm on Wallace Lake Road has six different builders involved. There are 182 homes in the plans, in addition to nature trails, a pond and fishing pier among other things for this development where the houses start at $350,000. This is just one recent example of the growth explosion happening in south Shreveport.

quote:

Now that St. George is a reality, I can see this happening in Shreveport and having southeast Shreveport secede and become a new town."
"I think it's a very likely possibility. At some point you determine how far you want the city boundaries to go. Once the legislative branch of government determines that these are the boundaries and this is as far as the city is going to go out, the option becomes you don't continue to annex properties in and that leads to the possibilities of those properties establishing themselves as municipalities,"

These areas of Southeast Shreveport are where the upper middle class and wealthy in Shreveport are moving to (as well as just south of town into Desoto Parish). In recent years, business has started to follow them to the area. We've had a Kroger Marketplace anchored development site that features a gas station, higher end liquor store, restaurants all targeted at the money in this area.

Through the years, the city has selectively annexed these areas (the Southern most pink on the map--mostly neighborhoods). Meanwhile the city infrastructure is crumbling, the economy is stagnant, taxes and crime are high and theres a lack of faith in city leadership. This article is the first chatter I've heard of it but it wouldn't shock me to see this cohort of money makers reject its ties to Shreveport and establish it's own municipality similar to St. George. Would be a devastating blow to Shreveport.

I don’t see it happening as there are still lots of middle to upper class folks living in Shreveport proper as well.

I own a house in Broadmoor, once my fiancée moves here, gets established, and we settle on what we want to do for a new home we'll be heading to SE Shreveport. Medical offices are under development, lots of work being done along Southern Loop, my folks live in Southern Trace...no real reason to stay in the middle of town when I-49 and the loops make it so easy to get anywhere else.

It’s great to learn about these green shoots around the state. I wish these folks the best.
