Should we have an elected judiciary?

Been seeeing a lot of stories about lawyers who put up tons of money to get these folks elected to the bench, of course expecting reciprocation later on. This is certainly a perversion of justice and is not in the benefit of the public as a whole.

No.
It's a blueprint for corruption, and results in complete retards getting on the bench.

Hell no. Electing judges is how Roy Moores are made. Anytime you turn judges into politicians you make things worse.

Not unless you want more Trudy White and Bonnie Jackson types. They are all about politicking for that next election.

My friend who works for an insurance company was telling me about pi lawyers inviting judges to their suites for sporting events, fishing/hunting trips, only to appear before them in court. Does that shite really go on?

Hell no. Judges should be independent of popular opinion in order to make the proper decisions, even if they are unpopular.

being appointed is no less a corrupt process. Politicians just appoint their friends with zero means for the people to recall them.
Judicial elections are corrupt AF, but at least voters have a mechanism to get rid of a bad judge. There's nothing that can be done regarding bad appointed judges.
The problem isn't that our judges are elected. The problem is that our elections themselves have been corrupted into being nothing more than naked bribery schemes.
What we need to be addressing is how our campaigns are financed and managed.

Judges cannot accept ANY gifts with monetary value. I'm not certain on how that applies to suite tickets.
I am sure hunting is ok.
The big loop hole for judges to get lavish treatment is the conference rule. Judges are expected to speak at law conferences and seminars. So the people who run the conferences (usually at a resort), put the judges up in nice suites with gift bags and what not.

Yes.
The direct election of judges needs to end.

Here's the thing though, the federal judiciary essentially is elected by virtue of their appointment by our elected POTUS and confirmation by our elected Senators at least in the vicarious sense. I personally would prefer the states adopt the federal model of appointing/confirming judges if that's feasible, electing judges through the direct political ballot box and associated with a political party to adjudicate legal claims in court is stupid as hell.

The problem is that that 99% of the public is not qualified to decide who would and wouldn't be a good judge. I don't wan't judges making politically influenced decisions. I wan't them to decide cases based on the rule of law even with that decision is politically unpopular.

My business law prof was telling me no matter how much we think our judicial system is crooked, it's 1000 times worse......and FWIW he had been disbarred

Yes.
There's a certain judge in the BR area that routinely is dined at a local steakhouse by the plaintiffs' bar. Not only does that judge enjoy the meal and the company, but she routinely orders an extra meal as well.

In Louisiana, we not only elect judges, we give them authority to award up to $50k without the bs filter of a jury.

And business and industry, insurance companies, insurance defense lawyers, and oil and gas companies give even more to judicial campaign chests.
It isn't just trial lawyers.

This. The trial lawyers, unions, and "non profits" give to the democrats.
Insurance companies and defense lawyers give to the republicans.
The big oil companies buy everyone.
Unless you're already well known or a district is heavily gerry-mandered in your favor, it takes at least $150k to hope to win a district judge race, $300k to win a spot on a court of appeal, and $500k to get a spot on the state Supreme Court.
Judges don't get paid anything near that.

Take a look at the CBC and ask yourself this question again!
Do you really want a buncha Mad Max Waters and Rhinestone Cowgirl Empty Barrels sitting in judgement of whether or not your freedom or kids freedoms remain intact?

You get a fair shake in law if the judge doesn't know either party personally. I always when I walk into a courtroom and the Jewish judge and lawyer I am up against are asking how the wife/kids are.
But, for real, the appointed federal judges who don't have much accountability actually end up being way more attentive/responsive to their cases than a lot of elected state court malcontents. I will concede that much of that has to do with them just being higher up in the food chain in terms of intelligence/work ethic, but it does make me re-think the elected judge thing.
