Seriously, according all the "news" outlets I need to get prepared.

John McWhorter says Russian is the most difficult language to learn for a non native. I've read a lot of his stuff. He's excellent.

Good luck. Learning the Cyrillic is no joke. I've spoken it for 20+ years .
Still easier than something like Chinese or Arabic.
