No we wouldn’t. If I was single now, I’d be looking at as close to the half my age plus seven formula as I could get. And so would everyone else.

No- that may be your preference, but it’s not everyone else’s. I live in an area with higher than average incomes and education. Marriageable men (emotionally mature, fiscally responsible, educated) that I personally know tend to date at peer age or about 5 years below. That’s how you build a life and stable family with a best friend and lover.
If you were single now, it sounds like you’d need the number of an escort agency and an iron-clad prenup. While I have no doubt men are sexually attracted to 20 year olds, most normal older guys are emotionally attracted to an equal (in age, education, finance status).

My brother observed that women tend to get things figured out by 25. At that point they’ve lived enough to understand how the world works, to know what they’re looking for, and most importantly, they understand themselves.

I do think it’s easier dating someone who’s 25 vs 21 or 22.

That’s fair. I’d say 25 is a good lower cutoff for a man of 35-40 years.

Yeah, I’m a little over 50 and no way would I want a 25 year old for anything meaningful. 35 plus, hopefully on hormone treatment. A little bit of testosterone for a woman equals a happy and exhausted partner.

In the other hand, as women hit their thirties they get very serious about marriage. And that raises a fairness issue. I don’t want to waste anyone’s (limited) time if I’m not interested in getting married.

Yeah, but there is an increasing number of women who don't want to have children at all. Not as teenagers, not at 30 ...never. This has been a factor in Japan but the numbers are increasing in the US.

They find other options that are less restrictive.

A lot of people have replaced marriage and children with hookups and pets.

In Japan that’s driven by the lack of suitable partners. At least from my anecdotal experience.

Is it because they want something easier, or is it just the best substitute they can find?

My mind goes into two different directions on this.

One, there’s a powerful, innate, desire to procreate and raise children. Can you actually override that?

Two, damaged people generally retreat from life, and I think we’re producing a lot of damaged people.

IDK, my wife is not polite, kind or nurturing.

Well, that kinda sounds like she’s a giant bitch when you put it that way, Zach.

1. 'Giant'...She's 5-7, 118
2. 'Bitch'...She NEVER tells me what I ought to do.
