I find it somewhat hard to believe that this guy acted alone (and maybe he did) but it's eyewitness stories like this that make you really wonder.
I'm going with the lone nut theory. He knew he was going to die. If he had a political or religious motive, he'd have made sure it would be known. He was fricked up crazy. Most likely end of story. How and when he acquired the guns might give us more insight.
