He also said he had “trouble with a girl” and he believed the timing of the attack, carried out on Valentine’s Day, wasn’t a coincidence.

The attack wasn't racially motivated though? The victims were pretty diverse.

Would be my guess too. Kind of contradicts himself about not knowing the shooter, but knows he recently had girl trouble and knows enough about the shooter to say it was a coincidence it was on V day.

I think the kid was adopted by the Cruz's.
Regardless, it seems the AP missed getting answers to a lot of questions before publishing the story you linked here, though.
