The Fable of the Cowboy, Cuckold, and Snake

Once upon a time, a cowboy and cuckold strolled down a forest trail. Suddenly, they noticed a large rattlesnake in the path ahead. The cuck began to back away. But his friend said, “Don’t be chicken, boy! You ain’t doin’ nothin’ but walkin’ the public path. You’ve got every right to be here. Screw that snake!”

With that he shoved the cuck forward. The snake immediately registered a perceived threat. It coiled. It hissed. It rattled. All the while, the cowboy nudged his friend further toward it. He encouraged the cuck to grab a stick and poke the snake to force it to give way. The cuck complied.

Finally, after one poke too many, the rattler struck. The speed and viciousness stunned both men. The poor cuck was hit. He collapsed with the envenomation. After the strike, the cowboy tried to aid his friend. But every time he did, the snake threatened to strike again, and the cowboy had to back off.

So all three players remained as they were, nearly frozen in their positions on the path, except that one of the three slowly succumbed as they did.

Who is to blame for the outcome?
Who do you support?
Who should the PT support?
The snake? The cuck? The cowboy?

The answer is “none of the above.” It was a dumb, avoidable situation with a predictably terrible outcome. The best one can do is to simply recognize it for what it is in order to avoid recurrence in the future.
