Because they do not require any sort of actual work.

Do you know anyone that has worked on capitol hill around these people?

They spend their entire day talking. They have a 2 hour lunch sponsored by lobyists, talk some more in the afternoon, do a few radio or TV spots, then attend another lobbyist sponsored dinner.

They dont pay for travel, entertainment, or even most vacations.

They basically retire the day they take office.

He finished his life's work in stacking the Supreme Court, and there's nothing more that motivates him to live. It's like seeing an elderly sea turtle put out to pasture.
